Other common private label brands are Target's Mainstays and Costco's Kirkland. In many cases, companies that buy private label products have some control over how the manufacturers produce them.

There are several things to consider before jumping into your new private label business. Let's look at the basics.

1. Know Who You Are Selling To

Here are some ways you can do a little market research to validate your idea and get people actually interested.

  • Google Trends. Enter your idea and see if the trend is up, down, or steady.
  • Ubersuggest. This tool displays activity metrics such as how many people search for that term each month.
  • Amazon best sellers. What products are hot right now? You can focus your efforts by searching across different categories.
  • Competitor research. Who sells similar products The scope of your website, social media and reviews.

2. Start Looking for Manufacturers

List manufacturers to contact if you have an idea for a product you want to sell. It's important to take the time to talk to at least a few different manufacturers.

Because once you make a contract, you are completely dependent on it to meet your needs and expectations. Here are some key points to talk to and negotiate with manufacturers.

  • Ask as many questions as needed and gauge the responses. Not answering a question or taking too long to answer can cause problems down the line.
  • Be 100% clear about pricing, turnaround times, contracts and agreements, specifications and terms for submitting your branded artwork.

Organic marketing is closer to the grassroots. Build slowly over time and don't use a pay-to-play approach like ad channels. Here are some of the main ways to organically market your store

  • Social media marketing. Almost every brand is on social media. Plan consistent, engaging and fun content for channels like Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and Twitter.
  • Content marketing. Create custom content such as blogs, e-books, guides, and infographics. Post it on your website and use it to attract website visitors.
  • Marketing Emails. Add opt-ins to your website to collect email addresses, then send you special offers, helpful resources, and company updates.
