Hiboy S2 Review, Cheap Electric Scooter with Superior Features

How many scooters are enough? It's not the flashiest electric scooter, however Hiboy S2 offers a lot of value for those looking for an affordable ride to get from home to work or around town.
The motor is quite powerful, the design is sensual and details such as the dual brake system and the lights surrounding the scooter stand out. It's not perfect (I prefer a smoother ride and more range), but it's fine for long haul trips. Read other Hiboy S2 reviews to see how it compares to the best electric scooters.
Pricing and Availability
The Highboy S2 is available online at Amazon and other retailers. With a selling price of Rp. 8.2 million, it seems a bit expensive for what it offers, but I've seen it on sale for Rp. 6 million. At this price, it's definitely worth buying. Highboy also sells a version of the S2 with a removable seat for Rp. 7.2 million.
The company sells an upgraded version, the S2 Pro, for Rp. 10 millions. It has a more powerful 500W motor (350W S2 motor), bigger 10-inch tires (the S2 has 8.5-inch tires), and a longer range of up to 25 miles compared to the S2's 17 miles. The S2 Pro also comes with a detachable seat for Rp. 9 million.
Hiboy S2 design
This is a functional scooter. Design-wise, it looks a bit more upscale than other budget scooters like the GoTrax GXL V2. The Hiboy S2's cables are all internally routed on the front and only stick out from the bottom.
The right handlebar features a push button throttle and handbrake which engages the scooter's mechanical disc brake. There is another push button on the left handlebar for regenerative brakes. The controls are all comfortable and easy to use.
Unlike the Segway Ninebot Kickscooter Max, the S2 has a small color display in the middle of the handlebar. In the center is a large reading showing the speed. Below that is the battery meter, and at the top is a bar that shows how much power you have used by scooter motors or how much energy is sent back to the battery when using braking regenerative.
The S2's deck is covered in nice, grippy rubber with a small diamond-shaped core. The deck felt a bit small (at least for a big guy like me), but I never felt like my feet were slipping.
Hiboy S2 performance
The S2's 350-watt motor isn't going to win races, but it does keep me going fast on flat roads at up to 19 mph. Going uphill is another matter. When riding my standard test incline (about 6% grade), the S2 slowed down to about 3-4 mph.
It was so slow I almost had to get down and walk. If you are a larger person and plan to ride your scooter up hills, we recommend a model with a more powerful motor.
In addition to the headlights and taillights, the S2 has an array of LEDs that run the length of the base and illuminate the ground on either side. It's a neat effect and helps others see you a little bit better.
The S2's headlights are bright enough and project a beam that hits the ground about 15 feet in front of the scooter. Helpful when trying to find a hole at night, but wish it was closer to the front of the scooter.
The S2 uses 8.5-inch rubber tires. It's never level, but it's a bit bumpier than I'd like on uneven pavement. I found myself avoiding cracks and potholes rather than riding a scooter on a flat tire.
We like that the S2 has regenerative braking and rear mechanical disc brakes. I find myself using the former more than the latter. Regenerative braking is gentler, so it brakes much more gently compared to disc brakes. It's very aggressive. Not a bad thing.
Perfect for commuting, the Hiboy S2 folds up quickly thanks to the sturdy yet clever locking mechanism on the front. I'm not a fan of the rear latch that holds the downtube in place when the scooter is folded.
You have to manually lift the small metal hook and hang the small hook on the downtube. A little more complicated than expected. And at less than 30 pounds, the S2 is heavier than the Razor Icon and Unagi Model One. Both weigh about 25-26 pounds.
Battery Life and Range
Hiboy says the S2 has a maximum range of 17 miles. Assume you weigh 150 pounds, are driving at 77°F, and have 50% throttle on flat pavement.
After about 7 miles of driving, including some hills but mostly flat, the S2's battery went down to 2 out of 5 bars, so we estimate the scooter will travel about 10 miles before needing to be charged repeat.
It's not bad, but not much better than the best electric scooters for kids. Then your mileage may vary depending on your size and where you drive.
Conclusion
If you can find a Hiboy S2 for Rp. 6 million, this is a great value as it offers more features and a more powerful motor than any other electric scooter in the range price. For example, the GoTrax GXL V2 has a 250W motor, a short range of 12 miles, and costs around Rp. 4.9 million.
The Swagtron Swagger 5 Boost with a 300W motor and 12 mile range is Rp. 4.2 million. The Hiboy's ride quality isn't surprising given the rubber tires, and the range could be better, but we appreciate items like the regeneration and handbrake, as well as all the lighting. If your scooter needs are small, the Hiboy S2 will satisfy.
