Definition of Gurindam

In terms of language, gurindam is taken from the Indian Tamil taste, namely "Kirindam" which means "Parable". Gurindam is a short literary work influenced by Hindu literature.
Meanwhile, in the Big Indonesian Dictionary, gurindam is defined as a poem containing advice or advice consisting of two lines. Generally, the first line contains the problem or cause of the case. While the second line is the result of the case.
Gurindam is very synonymous with rhymes of advice and not even a few people consider the two the same. In fact, basically the two literary works are very different. If the gurindam consists of two lines in one stanza, the rhyme of advice can be more than four lines.

Characteristics of Gurindam

Like other literary works, gurindam also has characteristics, including the following:

- Consists of two lines in the stanza.
- The maximum number of words per line is 10-14 words.
- Contains the meaning of advice and philosophy.
- Each gurindam line has a cause and effect relationship.

Types of Gurindam

In general, gurindam are categorized into two types, namely:
1. Related Gurindam
This type of hooked gurindam is characterized by the existence of a connection between the first and second stanzas. The related Gurindam emphasizes the relationship between the stanzas so that the message to be conveyed can be more clearly described. So, the reader or listener understands the meaning of the gurindam.

2. Serial Gurindam
The serial gurindam type is marked by the similarity of the words in the first line and each stanza. Gurindam sequences have a rhythm almost like poetry, but the structure is more like a rhyme.

In general, there are two types of gurindam forms, namely: related and series. Gurindam hooks have a relationship between each stanza, precisely the relationship of cause and effect. While the serial gurindam has the characteristic that the words in the first line in the stanza must be the same.
