What is PMI?

PMI or the Indonesian Red Cross is a neutral and independent organization in Indonesia and is engaged in the humanitarian field. PMI was formed on the basis of the Indonesian nation itself, although it was influenced by the Red Cross whose attitude was universal. The formation of PMI stems from the encouragement of the human spirit and on a national basis.

When carrying out activities, PMI always maintains its principles, namely humanity, neutrality, volunteerism, independence, universality, and unity. Currently, PMI has 33 local PMIs and has 408 PMI branches throughout Indonesia. PMI's main office is located on Jalan Jend Gatot Subroto, Jakarta.

PMI History

PMI or the Indonesian Red Cross was formed on October 12, 1873. Where at that time it was still in the Dutch colonial government and at that time the name of the Indonesian Red Cross was named Nederlands Rode Kruis Afdeling Indie (NERKAI). But when Japan entered Indonesia and occupied the government, NERKAI was dissolved. After the Indonesian nation became independent, PMI was re-established on September 3, 1945. At that time President Soekarno chose dr. Buntaran who at that time was the Minister of Health to form the national red cross.

The National Red Cross consists of 5 committee members namely.

1. R Mochtar (chairman),
2. Djuhana,
3. Bahder Djohan,
4. Sitanala,
5. Marzuki.

It has been prepared to be able to form PMI and on September 17, 1945 PMI was officially formed. That date is called PMI day.

PMI has social and humanitarian tasks such as disaster management, community services, first aid training, and helping to provide blood donations. From a basic sense of humanity, PMI has helped many people in need. As in the disaster management section, PMI carries out community services by providing assistance and evacuation, health and medical teams, search, provision of soup kitchens, distribution of food packages, field hospitals, or clothing donations.

Many natural disaster events have motivated PMI to automatically provide assistance, including the Bantul earthquake, Aceh tsunami, and other natural disasters.
