Example of a Romance of Education in Indonesian
On the previous occasion we have briefly reviewed about types of romance, example of short romance, and example of historical romance in language Indonesia. This time, we will review educational romances along with some examples of educational romances.
Educational romance or bildungsroman is a type of romance in which the theme and content of the story focuses on the educational development of the main character in the story. This romance is also called romance era classic and romantic. Examples of educational romances include: Expanded Screen by Sutan Takdir Alisyahbana, Wrong Upbringing by Abdul Muis, dan Young blood by Adinegoro.

1. Example 1
The following is an example of an educational romance entitled Young blood Adinegoro's works quoted and excerpted from Novel Summary and Reviews IndonesiaModern written by Maman S. Mahayana (2007) with slight changes.
Nurdin is a Minangkabau youth who managed to become a doctor after ten years studying at the Medical School (Stovia). Soon after becoming a doctor, he intended to return to his hometown to see his parents.
On his way back to his hometown, he met a Sundanese girl named Rukmini who works as an HIS teacher. At that time, Rukmini intended to go to Bengkulu with her mother. His meeting with Rukmini on the ship at that time made Nurdin change. He was no longer a quiet young man and that's why he wanted to get acquainted with Rukmini. Nurdin then arrived at his parents' house. But Nurdin had no intention of staying there for long. He immediately returned to Betawi and worked in a large hospital. A year later, he was transferred to Bukittinggi.
While in Padang, he was invited by his uncle to a meeting that planned to establish a private school. During the meeting, he heard that a woman had applied to become a teacher at the private school. Turns out, the woman is Rukmini. And, in that meeting it was also decided to accept Rukmini to work as a teacher at the school.
However, it turns out that Nurdin's uncle has other intentions that Nurdin is not aware of. Uncle Nurdin intends to match Nurdin with his daughter. However, Nurdin has his own view on matchmaking. Nurdin also does not agree with Minangkabau marriage customs, one of which is about polygamy. According to Nurdin, matters related to customs such as polygamy should be eliminated.
Seven days before Nurdin started working in Bukittinggi, he met Rukmini again at the Padang station unexpectedly. Nurdin and Rukmini then talked about various things that made them closer and closer. An unexpected meeting with Rukmini made Nurdin even more eager to continue to meet Rukmini. Rukmini feels the same way. Rukmini becomes interested and has special feelings for Nurdin. They also became closer, especially when Rukmini's mother fell ill. Nurdin often went back and forth to check on Rukmini's mother. The situation Rukmini faced at that time made Nurdin even more convinced of his intention to propose to Rukmini to be his wife.
However, the closeness of Nurdin and Rukmini did not make Nurdin's mother happy. Nurdin's mother, who still adheres to adat, thinks that it should be Rukmini's mother who came to her to ask Nurdin to be Rukmini's husband. In addition, Nurdin's mother also thought that her son's rank was higher because he was a high-ranking person. Therefore, according to Nurdin's mother, coming to Rukmini's mother's house is an inappropriate and despicable act. In addition, coming to Rukmini's mother's house means that her son, who is a doctor, is considered a male who is not selling well.
Based on these considerations, Nurdin's mother then made a ploy to break the relationship between Nurdin and Rukmini. Nurdin's mother also came to Rukmini's house and conveyed the news that Nurdin would be married to another girl who was his mother's daughter. Not only Nurdin's mother who wants Nurdin and Rukmini's relationship to end. It is Harun, Rukmini's colleague, who also wants Nurdin and Rukmini's relationship to end. For that reason, Harun came to see Rukmini at her house. According to Harun, who claimed to have divorced his wife, Nurdin will marry next month with a girl of his mother's choice who is still in Betawi. Harun also intends to propose to Rukmini to be his wife.
Various attempts were made by Harun to break the relationship between Nurdin and Rukmini. One of them is taking a photo of Rukmini from the house of Rukmini's best friend named Gafur. The photo was then placed on the table beside Aaron's bed. Then Harun pretended to be sick and called Nurdin to check on him. Nurdin also came to check Harun's condition and how surprised Nurdin was to find Rukmini's photo on Harun's table. Nurdin also asked about Rukmini's photo. Harun then tells about his relationship with Rukmini which is actually not true. Without investigating the truth story Harun and Nurdin finally broke off their relationship with Rukmini.
The news certainly made Nurdin's mother incredibly happy. Nurdin's mother felt that her strategy had worked. However, after breaking up with Rukmini, Nurdin actually experienced an enormous disappointment. Nurdin no longer cares about himself. This made Nurdin's mother feel guilty and sorry for breaking Nurdin's relationship with Rukmini in bad ways. The regret that arose in Nurdin's mother made him fall ill. Nurdin's mother finally admitted that Nurdin's break with Rukmini was a ploy. After admitting his mistake, Nurdin's mother finally died.
Bad things happened to Aaron. Harun reportedly committed suicide by hanging himself in prison for committing various crimes. These two events made Nurdin aware that the break up between him and Rukmini was not only caused by his mother's tactics but also Harun's trickery. Nurdin also regrets having decided on Rukmini. He finally fell ill.
One day, Nurdin ordered someone to pick up Rukmini and regret what he had done to Rukmini. Rukmini also came in the evening. The two men finally met again. Some time later, after being convinced of Rukmini's loyalty, Nurdin also intended to build a household mahligai with Rukmini.
2. Example 2

The story begins with the figures of brothers with different temperaments, Tuti and Maria. Tuti is an older sister who is always serious and active in various women's activities. She is even active in giving speeches about the equal rights of women. At that time, the spirit of women was soaring that they began to demand equal rights with men. Meanwhile, Maria is a lively and cheerful sister so that everyone around her will definitely enjoy her presence.
In the midst of these two beautiful virgins, appears Yusuf, a medical student, who at that time was better known as the College of Physician College. One day, Yusuf met Maria and Tuti at the aquarium building. The meeting gave a special impression for Yusuf. Until finally, Yusuf always wanted to meet Mary.
The meeting continued to the next meetings. It was from these various follow-up meetings that Joseph began to fall in love with Mary. It turned out that Yusuf's love was not one-sided. Mary also fell in love with Joseph until they eventually became lovers.
Meanwhile, Tuti, who saw her sister's love affair, actually wanted to have a lover. Especially after he received letter the love of Supomo, an educated young man who is kind and virtuous. However, because the young man is not her ideal, she rejects his love. Since then, his days are getting busier with activities organization and did his hobby of reading books so that he forgot a little about his dreams of a lover.
Until one day, Maria and Tuti had a big fight. The quarrel was caused by Tuti's criticism of Maria. Tuti criticized that love Mary to Joseph is too much and can weaken Mary herself. But Maria, whose heart was angry at that time, replied to Tuti's criticism by saying that in matters of love, Tuti was very calculating and never wanted to lose anything. In addition, Tuti always thinks about the congress rather than thinking about her feelings. And this is where Tuti realizes that she will never be able to fight her nature as a woman who has feelings for love.
Some time later, Mary and Joseph finally agreed to be engaged. After going through the stages of introduction, meeting with the family, and a visit by Joseph, a bond was made between Mary and Joseph. But unfortunately, just before the wedding, Maria fell ill. His illness was severe, malaria and tuberculosis, so he had to be treated at the Pacet Sanatorium. Not long after, Maria breathed her last. Before death came, Maria ordered Tuti, her sister, to be willing to accept Yusuf. Tuti did not refuse and began the engagement between Tuti and Yusuf. Finally, not long after, the two got married and lived happily ever after.
