1. Religious Studies

The science of the world is concerned with worldly things.

For example, mathematics, medicine, physics, meteorology, and many others.

Verses of the Qur'an about Science

Allah SWT always mentions that people who seek knowledge actually have a higher degree than people who do not seek knowledge.

This is evidenced by the many verses of the Qur'an that have meaning or advice in seeking knowledge or mentioning the virtues of knowledge.

The following are some verses of the Qur'an that mention the virtues of knowledge, including:

1. Surah Az Zumar verse 19:

قُلْ هَلْ يَسْتَوِي الَّذِيْنَ يَعْلَمُوْنَ وَالَّذِيْنَ لَا يَعْلَمُوْنَ

"Qul hal yastawiilladziina ya'lamuuna walladziina laa ya'lamuuna".

Meaning:

Say, is it the same between those who know and those who do not know? (Qs. Az Zumar: 9)

2. Surah Thaaha verse 14:

"Waqurrobbi zidnii 'ilmaan".

3. Surah Ali Imran verse 18:

شَهِدَ اللهُ اَنَّهُ لَا اِلَهَ اِلَّا هُوَ وَالْمَلَا ئِكَةُ وَاُولُوْ الْعِلْمِ قَائِمًا بِالْقِسْطِ اِلَا اِلَهَ اِلَّا هُوَ الْعَزِيْزُ الْحَكٍيْمُ

"Shahidallahu annahu laa ilaha illaa huwa walmalaa'ikatu wa'uuluul 'ilmi qoo'iman bilqisti ilaa illaha illaa huwal'aziizul hakiimu".

Meaning:

Allah mentions that there is no God (who has the right to be worshiped) but He who upholds justice. The angels as well as various people of knowledge (also mention that). There is no God (who has the right to be worshiped) but Him, the Most Mighty, the Wise. (Qs. Ali Imran: 18)

4. Surah Al Mujlah verse 11:

يَرْفَعِ اللهُ الذِّيْنَ ءَامَنُوْا مِنْكُمْ وَالَّذِيْنَ اُوْتُوْا الْعِلْمَ دَرَجَاتٍ وَاللهُ بِمَا تَعْمَلُوْنَ خَبِيْرٌ

"Yarfa'illahulladziina aamanuu minkum waalladziina uutul 'ilma darajaatin wallaahu bimaa ta'maluuna khobiirun".

Meaning:

Allah will raise those who believe among you and those who have been given knowledge a number of degrees above them. (Qs. Al Mujlah: 11)

Hadith about Science

Not only the word of Allah SWT that mentions the primacy of knowledge, but there are also several hadith narrated from friends who also strengthen and help us to always seek knowledge.

The following are some hadiths that mention the virtues of seeking knowledge, including:

1. Hadith narrated by Bukhari

طَلَبُ الْعِلْمِ فَرِيْضَة عَلَى كُلِّ مُسْلِمٍ وَمُسْلِمَةٍ

"Tholabul 'ilmi qoriidlotun 'ala kulli muslimin wa muslimat".

Meaning:

Seeking knowledge is obligatory for all Muslims, male or female.

2. Hadith narrated by Turmudzi (priority of seeking knowledge):

مَنْ خَرَجَفِى طَلَبُ الْغِلْمِ فَهُوَ فِى سَبِيْلِ اللهِ حَتَّى يَرْجِعَ

"Man khofii tholabul 'ilmi fahuwa fii sabiilillaahi hatta yarji'a".

Meaning:

Whoever goes out in search of knowledge is in the way of Allah until he returns.

مَنْ اَرَا دَالدُّنْيَا فَعَلَيْهِ بِالْعِلْمِ. وَمَنْ اَرَادَالْااَخِرَةَ فَعَلَيْهِ بِلْعِلْمِ. وَمَنْ اَرَادَهُمَا فَعَلَيْهِ بِالْعِلْمِ

"Man araa daaddunyaa fa'alayhi bil'ilmi, wa man araadaal Akhira fa'alayhi bil'ilmi, wa man araadahumaa fa'alayhi bil'ilmi".

Meaning:

Whoever wants the life of this world, it is obligatory for him to have knowledge, and whoever wants it life hereafter, it is obligatory for him to have knowledge, and whoever wants both, then it is obligatory for him have knowledge.

4. Hadith that mentions seeking knowledge until death:

اَطْلُبِ الْعِلْمَ مِنَ الْمَهْدِ اِلَى الَّلحْدِ

"Uthlubil 'ilma minal mahdi ilallahdi".

Meaning:

Seek knowledge from the cradle to the grave. (Al-Hadith)

5. Hadith narrated by Turmudzi (obligation to study for the world and the hereafter):

مَنْ سَلَكَ طَرِيْقًا يَلْتَمِسُ فِيْهِ عِلْمًا شَهَّلَ اللهُ بِهِ طَرِيْقًا اِلَى الْجَنَّةِ

"Man salaka thoriiqon yaltamisu fiihi 'ilman sahhalallahu bihi thoriiqon ilaljannati".

Meaning:

Whoever treads a path in search of knowledge. Surely Allah will make it easy for him to go to heaven.

6. Rasulullah said:

إِذَا مَاتَ ابْنُ آدَمَ انْقَطَعَ عَمَلُهُ إِلا مِنْ ثَلاثٍ: صَدَقَةٍ جَارِيَةٍ ، أَوْ عِلْمٍ يُنْتَفَعُ بِهِ ، أَوْ وَلَدٍ صَالِحٍ يَدْعُو لَهُ

Meaning:

"When a person dies, his deeds are cut off, except for three things, namely almsgiving, useful knowledge and a pious child." (HR. Muslim).

Benefits

Prayer before and after learning has many benefits and is good for those who practice it. Here are some of the benefits of prayer before and after study, including:

1. Avoid trouble

Studying a science will certainly be faced with various kinds of problems or obstacles.

So, start the activity by praying. God willing, your learning process will run smoothly and the knowledge gained will be more blessed.

2. Goals will become clearer

Learning certainly has a clear goal. By praying, you have a clear goal of what you are going to study.

With clear goals, you will avoid doubts in learning. Praying can be evidence if you have given up.

3. Get the right answer

To get the right answer, you can also pray before studying.

For example, when you are about to take an exam.

2. Prayer before the second study (short)

رَبِّ زِدْنِي عِلْمًا وَارْزُقْنِيْ فَهْمًا وَاجْعَلْنِيْ مِنَ الصَّالِحِيْنَ

"Robbi zidnii 'ilman Warzuqnii fahmaa, Waj'alnii minash-shoolihiin."

Meaning:

O Allah, increase my knowledge and give me the ability to understand it, and make me one of your pious servants.

"Alloohumma Akhrijnaa Min Dzulumaatilwahmi Wa Akrimnaa binuuril Fahmi Waftah'alainaa Bima'rifatika Wasahhil Lanaa Abwaaba Fadl-lika Ya Arhamar Roohimiin."

Meaning:

O Allah, deliver us from the darkness of prejudice, glorify us with the light of understanding, open the understanding of knowledge to us and open for us the doors of Your grace, O the Most High merciful.

اَللّٰهُمَّ أَرِنَا الْحَقَّ حَقًّا وَارْزُقْنَا اتِّـبَاعَهُ وَأَرِنَا الْبَاطِلَ بَاطِلاً وَارْزُقْنَا اجْتِنَابَهُ

"Allahumma Arinal Haqqa Haqqan Warzuqnat suddenly. Wa Arinal baathila Baa-Thilan Warzuqnaj tinaabahu”
Meaning:

O Allah, show us the truth, so that we may follow it. And show us evil so that we can stay away from it.

2. Prayer after the second study

رَبَّنَا انْفَعْنَا بِمَاعَلَمْتَنَا الَّذِيْ يَنْفَعُنَا وَزِدْنَا عِلْمًا وَالْحَمْدُلِلّٰهِ عَلَى كُلِّ حَالٍ

"Rabbanan fa'naa bima 'alamtanaldzi yanfa'una wa zidna 'ilman walhamdulillahi 'ala kulihal".
Meaning:

O our Lord, make our knowledge useful knowledge, teach us about what is useful for us and add knowledge to us, all praise is due to Allah in every condition.

3. Prayer after the third study belajar

اَللّٰهُمَّ اِنِّى اِسْتَوْدِعُكَ مَاعَلَّمْتَنِيْهِ فَارْدُدْهُ اِلَىَّ عِنْدَ حَاجَتِىْ وَلاَ تَنْسَنِيْهِ يَارَبَّ الْعَالَمِيْنَ

"Allaahumma innii istaudi'uka maa 'allamtaniihi fardud-hu ilayya 'inda haajatii wa laa tansaniihi yaa robbal 'alamiin"

Meaning:

O Allah, I actually entrust to You what You have taught me, so return it to me when I need it. Don't make me forget him. O Lord of nature.
