Patriotism is an attitude defend the country and nationalist. Patriotism is related to the attitude of love for the country. In the past, the Indonesian people fought against the invaders by taking up arms to realize the independence of Indonesia.
For those who could not attend physical battles, they contributed their energy and material costs. All of this was created because of a patriotic attitude based on love for the homeland or nationalism as an Indonesian citizen.

Patriotism is an attitude that is brave, unyielding and willing to sacrifice for the sake of the nation and state.
Patriotism comes from the word "patriot" and "ism" which mean heroism or hero soul, or “heroism” and “patriotism” in English. The sacrifice can be in the form of property or body.

Patriotism has several characteristics, including:
- Sympathy for the nation. Patriotism makes a person able to love his nation and country without making the country a self-beneficial goal. Patriotism creates solidarity to achieve the welfare of the nation.
- Patriotism is able to see the strengths and weaknesses of the nation.
- With the capital values and culture of the nation, struggling at this time to achieve the ideals of the nation.
- A sense of self-identity. Patriotism is an attitude of wanting to see, accept, and develop the character and personality of the nation.
- Open nature. Patriotism means seeing one's nation in the context of the world's life, willing to be involved in it and willing to learn from other nations for the betterment of the nation.
