Understanding Programs, Functions, Types and Examples

A program is a collection of instructions used to set the computer to perform certain actions. Without the program, the computer really can't do anything or won't work. Only the machine becomes empty.

In addition, the program is one part of several important aspects of the computer. People who create programs are often referred to as programmers or programmers.

The activity of making programs is known as programming. So programming is a collection of sequences of commands to a computer to do something. These commands require a separate language. Like human languages, programming languages have certain rules that computers can understand.

Understanding Programs According to Experts

The following is a definition defined by experts. Let's see together the explanation below.

  • Sukrisno

A program is an expression, word, or statement that is assembled and compiled into a unified procedure, in the form of a sequence the steps, to be able to solve the given problem by using a programming language so that it can be executed by computer.

  • According to kkbi

Programs in computer science are programs created specifically to allow computers to perform certain functions.

  • Amikom Yogyakarta

The program is a set of computer instructions, while the stages and systematic methods in a program are algorithms.

  • Sugiyono (2005:21)

Program is a series of instructions in computer language that are arranged systematically and logically.

  • Sunarto, S. Kom

A program is a collection of interactions that are realized in the form of language, schema code, or others, when combined with media that can be used read by a computer will be able to make the computer work so that it can perform its special functions, and also prepare for designing instructions certain.

  • Wiryanto Dewobroto

The program is the result of compiling detailed steps for a solution (algorithm) to a problem.

  • Binanto (2009:1)

According to Binanto, programming can be interpreted in several ways, as follows:

    • Describes separate instructions which are usually referred to as Source Code made by programmers.
    • Describes an entire piece of executable software.
    • Program is a set or collection of written instructions made by a programmer or an executable part of a software.
    • Programming means creating computer programs.
    • Programming is a collection of sequences of commands to a computer to do something.
    • These commands require a separate language that the computer can understand.
  • Wikipedia

A computer program is a set of instructions written to carry out a specific function on a computer.

Program Functions

The existence of a program is something that must exist on a computer. Because the program can control the hardware (hardware) to perform its functions properly. Without programs, a computer is just a machine that cannot perform any task its user wants it to do.

From the explanation above, we can conclude that the main function of the program is to control the computer so that it can perform specific tasks as desired by the user. The program also has other functions including:

    • The program functions to regulate the relationship between hardware so that they can work simultaneously. Thus, the hardware can work according to their respective functions without any obstacles.
    • The program is used to identify the program. For example, File Explorer which acts as a place to access various other types of programs stored on the computer.
    • The program serves to connect the program with the hardware. For example, Device Manager which functions as a program in managing all hardware recognized by the Windows operating system.
    • The program serves to translate instructions into machine language. Examples are compilers from programming languages, such as Visual Basic, Java, C++ and others.

Program Types

Programs are categorized into 4 types, namely operating systems, application programs, utility programs, and programming languages. The following is a brief explanation of the four types along with an example program.

  • Operating system

The operating system is a complex computer program in which there are other programs as a bridge between the user and the computer. With the operating system, the computer can optimize the performance of each component in it. Examples of programs based on the type of operating system, the following is an example:

    • Microsoft Windows - An operating system developed by Microsoft using a GUI (Graphical User Interface)-based interface. If we want to know its development, Windows initially introduced the first version of Windows, namely Windows Graphic Environment 1.0. But currently, Windows is on a version of Windows 10.
    • UNIX – An operating system developed around 1970 by Ken Thompson and his colleague Dennis Ritchie at Bell Labs.
    • Macintosh Operating System - The operating system that many know as Mac OS was introduced in 1984. Mac also implements UNIX architecture and GUI (Graphical User Interface) based interface with a high level of stability.

  • Application Program

An application program is a type of program that can perform a specific task and function. Some of the programs included in the application program are as follows:

    • Word Processing – That is an application program designed specifically for word processing. For example, Microsoft Word, Corel Word Perfect, Lotus Word Pro, Open Office Writer and others.
    • Number Processing – That is a program designed to process data in the form of numbers. For example, Lotus 123, Kspread, StarOffice Calc, Microsoft Excel, and others.
    • Database Processor – A program designed to manipulate large amounts of data. For example, Microsoft Access, Firebird, Ms SQL Server, MySQL and so on.
    • Statistical Processor – That is a program designed to analyze statistical data, such as SPSS, Minitab, SAS and so on.
    • Accounting Program – Program specifically designed to manage financial & accounting data. For example, MOAE, Sybiz, MYOB, and others.
    • Presentation Program – It is a program specially designed to convey information in the form of a slide show. For example, Open Office Impress, Microsoft PowerPoint, Macromedia Flash and others.
    • Graphics Program – That is a program specifically designed to process an image. For example, Adobe Photoshop, Microsoft Visio, Corel Draw, and others.
    • Multimedia Program – That is a program specially designed to present information related to multimedia. For example, GOM Player, WinDVD, Windows Media Player, and so on.

  • Utility Programs

Utility programs are programs used to perform maintenance tasks, such as analyzing, configuring and optimizing computer security. For example, disk scanner, disk defargment, file manager, antivirus and others.

Understanding Programs, Functions, Types and Examples

  • Programming language

A programming language is a program that contains a series of instructions to perform a particular function. Some examples of programming languages are:

    • Low Level Language, For example: Assembly language.
    • Middle Level Language, For example: C language.
    • High Level Language, For example: Basic and Pascal.
    • Object Oriented Language, For example: Visual C, Visual Base, Delphi, Visual FoxPro.
