In English, “this leud pamphlet” (Test. of Love, bk. iii.), in Occleve “Though that this pamphlet” (Reg. of Pr. 2060), in Lydgate's “Whiche is a paunflet” (Minor Poems, 180), and in Caxton's “paunflettis and bookys” (Book of Eneydos, 1490, Prologue). Then in 1495, it was mentioned "this pampelet" (Test. Ebor. iv. 26).
In the article "Curiosities of Literature", by Isaac D'Israeli (1766-1848), citing the writings of Myles Davies entitled "Icon Libellorum", explained that the etymology of the word pamphlet can be divided into 4 origin. First, the pamphlet can be linked to the story “Nine Worthies of the World, of the Seven Champions of Christendom”, by Tom Thumb, Valentine and Orson, &c. An explanation of this etymology can be seen in the Rabbinic tradition, the Talmud, as well as with respect to the Pope's legend, the "Lives of the Saints" which are all in the form of pamphlets. Second, the meaning of the word pamphlet can be related to, all, and, I love (I love), signifying something that is loved by everyone; small and concise, and inexpensive, and then adapted to the understanding and reading of everyone. Third, based on Dr. Skinner in his book, "Etymologicon Linguæ Anglicanæ", the word pamphlet comes from the Belgian language, "pampier" which means small paper. Fourth, pamphlets are derived from the uniform recognition of all kinds of booklets, either few or many, joined by stitches or tied, good or bad, or serious or just joke.
