According to the Big Indonesian Online Dictionary, a syllogism is a form, way of thinking or drawing conclusions consisting of a general premise, a special premise, and a conclusion. A negative syllogism is a type of syllogism in which one of the premises is negative or is indicated by word dissenters such as not or not on the premise or conclusion. If one of the premises in a syllogism is negative, the conclusion will also be negative. Negative syllogism has the following formula:

a. First formula

  • General premise: All AB
  • Special premise: C = A
  • Conclusion: C = B

b. Second formula

  • General premise: All A = B
  • Special premise: C' A
  • Conclusion: C ' B

  • General Premise: All library visitors must not speak.
  • Special Premise: Artanti is a visitor to the library.
  • Conclusion: Artanti should not speak.

Example 4

  • General Premise: All Melati High School students should not be involved in a brawl.
  • Special Premise: Rudi is a Melati High School student.
  • Conclusion: Rudi should not be involved in a brawl.

Example 5

  • General Premise: Every child from poor families do not have to pay school fees.
  • Special Premise: Dian is a child from a poor family.
  • Conclusion: Dian does not need to pay school fees.

Example 6

  • General Premise: All blue group supporters are not allowed to come to the game.
  • Special Premise: Andi is a member of the blue group.
  • Conclusion: Andi should not come to the match.

Example 7

  • General Premise: All endangered animals should not be hunted.
  • Special Premise: The Sumatran tiger is an endangered animal.
  • Conclusion: Sumatran tigers should not be hunted.

Example 8

  • General Premise: All the children in the class are dressed in white and blue.
  • Special Premise: Riana is not wearing a blue white dress.
  • Conclusion: Riana is not a child in that class.
