Paragraph Description and Examples in Indonesian

Definition of Paragraph Description

Talking about the description paragraph, will not escape from sentence description. A paragraph is a collection of sentences arranged on a specific topic. So it can be said that the descriptive paragraph is a collection of descriptive sentences with a particular topic.

A descriptive paragraph is a paragraph that can describe or explain an object so that the reader seems to be able to see or feel the object. The descriptive sentence is related to the five senses, so the descriptive paragraph is also related to the five senses in describing an object.

Characteristics of Paragraph Description

Each type of paragraph has its own characteristics. This particularity is what characterizes a paragraph so that it can be distinguished from other types of paragraphs. Following are its characteristics:

  2. Involving the functions of the five senses in the description process
  3. Involves the physical characteristics and properties of the object, such as color, size, shape, certain properties

Types of Paragraphs Description

There are three types of descriptive paragraphs, namely spatial description paragraphs, subjective description paragraphs, and objective description paragraphs. In order to better understand and be able to distinguish these three types, the following is an explanation:

1. Spatial Description Paragraph

In the big Indonesian dictionary, spatial (English: spatial) means things related to space or place. So this paragraph can be interpreted as a paragraph that describes a space or place. Objects in the form of space or place are described according to their characteristics so that readers can easily imagine them.

2. Subjective Description Paragraph

Based on the interpretation in the big dictionaries language Indonesia, subjective with regard to views (feelings) themselves. In connection with the topic this time, this paragraph is a paragraph that is compiled based on the views or feelings of the author. Everything that is contained in paragraph is the result of the author's personal opinion. Even though it is the result of the author's opinion, this paragraph is still intended so that the reader seems to be able to see what the author is talking about.

3. Paragraph Description Objective

Contrary to the meaning of subjective, objective relates to the actual situation without being influenced by one's own views or feelings. This paragraph is defined as a paragraph that describes the state of an object in accordance with the actual conditions without being influenced by the opinion of the author.

1. Spatial Description Paragraph Example

This 5m x 5m room looks unfit for occupancy. No walls. There is only woven bamboo to ward off the bone-chilling wind. There is no seal. There is only a single size bed in the front corner. There is a stove and other cooking utensils in the back corner, next to the door that leads to the bathroom. The cupboard that was no longer sturdy was pressed against the wall and filled with clothes. Prayer mats, mukena, and the Koran are placed in a row on top of the cupboard. The carpet was stretched around the mattress with a small table beside the mattress. The books are neatly arranged on the table. There are no photos or any wall hangings, except for one silver calligraphy with an image of the Kaaba. The residence of Anis's father and mother shows a simplicity in life.

2. Example of a Subjective Description Paragraph

Ibu Sri is the strictest teacher in my school. In addition, he is the teacher most feared by almost all students from grade 1 to grade 6. He teaches mathematics. He has a height of about 165 cm with a weight of about 60 kg. Sri's mother has brown skin and curly black hair. Wherever he goes he always carries a black ink pen in his right hand. When teaching he always uses small-lensed glasses with white frames. Although almost all the students were afraid of him, but he never got angry with the students for no apparent reason. He always teaches math patiently until everyone understands. This is evidenced by the average score of my school's math test being ranked first in the province.

3. Example of an Objective Description Paragraph

Parangtritis Beach is a famous beach in the province of the Special Region of Yogyakarta. Compared to other beaches along the south coast, this beach is more popular with tourists. Parangtritis Beach is located about 25 km south of the city of Yogyakarta. Precisely this beach is located in village Parangtritis, Kretek District, Bantul Regency. Along the way to the beach, you will be treated to views of rice fields, rivers, and hills. Parangtritis Beach has big waves. Waves the beach can reach a height of 2-3 meters in the dry season. Another attraction is that there are mountains of sand around the beach area. These sand mountains are better known as dunes.
