Pingkan had been sitting in front of the mirror for more than an hour. Every time he looked in the mirror, he remembered his mother's words that he had used the mirror since he was a teenager in Makassar. The reason his father brought the antiques to Java was because Hartini had used the arena for decades. The mirror is a sacred object he said with a straight face, who has made your mother beautiful. Pingkan had never thought about that before, but after an hour of silence in front of her, for the first time she imagined what her mother's face looked like before moving to Java. There was no mother's face in the mirror that afternoon, only her own face which was gradually becoming as old as her mother.
