Concrete Nouns and Abstract Nouns and Examples
Nouns or better known as nouns are one of the types of words in language Indonesia. Nouns are often juxtaposed with various other types of words, such as verbs, adjectives, adverbs and so on. Previously we have discussed about types of words and types of nouns. In this article we will discuss about the meaning and differences between concrete nouns and abstract nouns.
A noun is a word that expresses the name of an object or something that is objectified. According to its position in a pattern sentence, then nouns often function as subject (S) or object (O). To distinguish and determine nouns contained in a sentence, we can pay attention to several characteristics of nouns, including:
- Nouns are formed from affixes (to late, pe-an, role, to-, -an, his)
- a noun can be expanded by adding an adjective after it
If a noun consists of more than two words or is called a group of words, then the two words can have the same structural characteristics. Meanwhile, if the noun comes from from one type of word, then the word can be transferred to another type of word. This transfer process is called transposition, where it occurs by adding suffixes or particles to the word. Furthermore, based on its form, nouns consist of 2 types, namely as follows:
1. Concrete Noun
A concrete noun is a word that states the name of objects, where the object in question is an object that can be captured by the five senses. Concrete nouns can be self-name, name substance and so forth. For example: cars, people, animals, houses, books, paper.
Example:
- The largest zoo in Asia is filled with more than 1200 individuals animal imported from various countries.
- We need about 30 pieces notebooks for the teaching and learning process for one semester.
- Rendang is a typical Indonesian food that has managed to penetrate into the most delicious food in the world.
- The former mining area is always flooded water every time down rain.
- Mom promised to buy me car if I manage to get the highest GPA score.
2. Abstract Noun
An abstract noun is a word that states the name of an object but the object in question is an intangible object invisible or can not be captured by the five senses such as name of state, name of job, name of nature, name of size, and others etc. For example: faith, profit, wealth, air, knowledge, goodness, ideas.

- We are always taught to spread kind to others regardless tribe, skin color and religion.
- Dion uses science he gets to help deal with the problems of people's lives in remote areas.
- Confidence It is a human right that cannot be enforced.
In fact, every word that contains bound morphemes or affixes can be classified as a noun. However, there are some word which cannot be categorized as a noun at all. This exception is based on the form of the word, even if the word is a thing.
