Rain, Music and Memories*
By: Yvonne de Fretes
The rain that had fallen throughout the afternoon had not stopped even though the night had continued to slide. There's not much he can do since he came down rain just now. Not much indeed, if it is defined as adequate movement or physical activity. The man just stood at the window full time that evening, staring at the rain hitting the pine leaves that lined the fence east of the bamboo gate.
In the opposite direction, the lush Bougenville with its pink flowers looks beautiful decorated with water droplets on the surface of the leaves. He enjoyed it to the fullest. Somber as the color of the sky that evening. As night fell, and he was still there.
The night wind blew a little chilly, but he didn't want to close the window yet. If only his late wife were still around, he would have done the same. Yes, Yasmin, his wife, would do the same with him on a night like that. Standing at the window, looking out at the falling rain, feeling the breeze. According to Yasmin rain is a blessing. Nature seems to be singing and the water drops hitting the window panes seem to create romantic love poetry lyrics.
He knew Yasmin's habits by heart, and that was what made her heart cut. Always, after the rain, except late at night, he would come down into the yard and take a deep breath, exhale, and then inhale again.
"The smell of soil and plants after the rain is very distinctive and comfortable," he said.
There are many other unique things about Yasmin that she still clearly remembers. It seems like all of that just happened yesterday. Don't think Yasmin only likes the rain. When they were on duty for several years in Palembang, Yasmin would sometimes take her for a trip out of town. Precisely to the location of the rubber forest., just to enjoy the sunlight that penetrates through the branches of hundreds of rubber trees which are lined up neatly so as to cause a beautiful play of light hitting the ground which is laden with thick leaves fall. He would get out of the car, walk deep into the rubber forest and stand there enjoying it all.
"Yasmin..." he whispered sadly. How they always loved each other and always will be. Although there are times when he feels he doesn't really understand Yasmin, that's not a problem. Isn't that how they always learn to understand throughout their married life. Maybe because of these things, their relationship is far from saturated. The important thing is that they can align themselves with their respective partners, so the differences instead of disturbing even more enrich their relationship.
The man smiled, for the first time all afternoon. Indeed, that is how he feels in his married life with Yasmin so that even though they are not blessed with a son, their life has content. The longer, throughout their fifteen years of marriage, the more they found themselves liking and loving each other.
Yasmin keeps a painting of a red rose measuring 70×60 cm, which she hangs in the living room, right opposite her favorite chair where she always sits reading. In this picture, on the stem of the rose, there is the words “Love is Enough.”
“I agree with that expression. You are?" he asked (Yasmin) while looking at the picture.
“Yeah… I don't think that phrase is always true,” he replied (the man).
"Not always? What do you mean? Love, substance the sacred, requires attitude, Yang," he said (Yasmin) again firmly, although still in a soft tone.
The man was silent, and that was a sign that he was reluctant to continue the conversation. Yasmin continued her reading.
Another time the man heard his wife say as if to himself, "Love has no interest other than realizing its meaning."
“From your favorite Lebanese poet right?” said the man.
Yasmin didn't answer, just walked over to her and caressed her cheek briefly before disappearing into the kitchen.
Yasmin… Yasmin… now she can still smile reminiscing about those beautiful moments.
The night crawls on. It's not raining as much as it was last night. The wind that stopped on his body was getting colder. He closed the window, then he took his place in the reading chair, reached for a book that had been lying on the table beside him, and began to read. Oh yes, at times like this, Yasmin will play LPs from her favorite classical music collection. The man refused to do it now, afraid the memories would slice his heart even more. He continued reading.
A knock on the door woke him up, but he sat still. His best friend came in, shook off the rain marks on his long coat, took it off and put it on the back of the chair near the door, and went straight into the living room. They looked at each other, smiled in silence, and before sitting down the friend went to a table in the corner. The man looked like he wanted to protest but he held it in. Then came a sonata by Schubert, Gretchen am Spinrade (Greta On The Spinning Wheel). They sat across from each other, listening quietly and enjoying the work which is said to be the composer's first work. This is also one of Yasmin's favorites. They both know that. The man remembered, Yasmin's last days were always decorated with beautiful symphonies until her departure from this world, one afternoon bright at their home, after the doctors couldn't treat the stomach cancer she had a few months ago.
He looked at his friend who occasionally visited, especially after he and Yasmin had settled in the capital. The three of them sometimes engaged in intimate conversation and jokes late into the night, and they both enjoyed it. Since Yasmin's departure, her best friends have come more often. He wanted to stop it but was worried that his friend would be offended.
The man actually prefers to be alone to overcome his pain and loneliness. He wanted the rooms to be just the two of them; he and Yasmin, and he was sure that it would be easy for him to get through those stinging moments. It was more painful when his best friend came and created such an atmosphere, on such a wet night. But for God's sake, how do you want to ban it? Till he heart
The two of them used to share a room in a boarding house during their college years, both had a hobby of taking pictures, they both have a crush on a cute girl at the end of the road, and the guy is happy because it turns out to be a girl it–Yasmin–chosen it.
