Definition of Broad Sentence

Simple sentences that experience expansion are called broad sentences. Broad sentences will certainly have more vocabulary than simple sentences. If a simple sentence only has at most one clause, then a broad sentence has at least two clauses. Another characteristic of broad sentences is the use of conjunctions such as and, but, then, when, while, etc.

Types of Broad Sentences

1. Equivalent Area Sentence

Equivalent broad sentences consist of at least 2 clauses where the two clauses are equal or each stand alone. Each of these clauses is then a core clause that forms a broad sentence. As the name implies, broad equivalent sentences contain equivalent conjunctions that connect all existing clauses. However, this is not an absolute requirement, because sometimes equivalent broad sentences also do not contain equivalent conjunctions. 2. Unequal Area Sentence

The second type of broad sentence is an unequal broad sentence or what is usually called a multilevel broad sentence. An unequal broad sentence consists of two unequal clauses and is connected by a conjunction, such as because, if, even though, because, etc. The position of the clause in a broadly unequal sentence is unequal. A clause in an unequal broad sentence consists of a main clause and a subordinate clause. The use of different conjunctions in broadly unequal sentences will give different meanings. Examples of unequal broad sentences include:

• Tomi drowned in the river because he could not swim.
• The fever in the child was so high that his body convulsed.
• I will come to the event if anyone wants me to come.
• The city streets are widened so that all vehicles can pass smoothly.
