6 Procedures for Writing Correct Abbreviations According to PUEBI
According to the kbbi.kemendikbud.go.id page, abbreviations are the result of shortening a term in the form of letters or a combination of letters. Abbreviations can also be defined as a summary or abbreviation of a term that is a bit too long. In writing, abbreviations must be written in certain ways that have been regulated in the General Guidelines for Indonesian Spelling (PUEBI). In the book “General Guidelines for Indonesian Spelling” page 26, it is stated that the writing of abbreviations consists of several procedures, where the procedures are as follows!
1. Abbreviation of Person's Name, Title, Greeting, Position, or Rank Followed by a Period on Each Abbreviation Element
The first procedure is carried out by giving a dot between the letters of the abbreviation of the person's name, title, greeting, position, or rank. For example:
- W.S. (Willybrordus Surendro Rendra): abbreviation of a person's name with a period (.) placed after the letter W and S.
- S.Sos: title abbreviation with a period (.) placed after the letter S.
- Mr. (brother): greeting abbreviation with a period (.) placed after the abbreviation.
- Cabbage. (colonel): position abbreviation with a period (.) placed after the abbreviation.
2. Abbreviation from Name of Government Institution, Educational Institution, Agency or Organization, as well as the name of the original state document, which is abbreviated to the initial letter, which must be written in capital letters
Unlike the first method, use of dot at writing this abbreviation is not needed at all. For example:
- BUMN: State-Owned Enterprises
- IPB: Bogor Agricultural University
- United Nations: United Nations
- Constitution: Basic Law
3. Abbreviations consisting of initial letters that are not the person's name must be written in capital letters without a period
This method is the same as method number two, only the abbreviated object is different. The object that is not the name of the person referred to in this procedure is the name of the company term, the name of the education level, and other general terms which are commonly abbreviated to the initial letter. Example:
- PT: Limited Liability Company:
- Junior High School: Junior High School.
- SIM: Driver's License.
- PUEBI: General Spelling Guidelines Language Indonesia.
4. Abbreviations consisting of three or more letters followed by a period
This procedure applies to abbreviations of terms commonly encountered in writing (such as etc., pages, and so on). For example:
- etc.: and others
- sda.: same as above
- Dear: Dear
- et al.: and friends
5. Abbreviations in Writing Terms Letter Correspondence consisting of two letters must be followed by a dot in each word
For example:
- a.n.: on behalf of
- s.d.: up to
- u.b.: for him
6. Chemical Symbol Abbreviations, Units of Measure, Measures, Scales, and Currency Don't Need to be Followed by a Period
Example:
- cm: centimeter

- Rp: rupiah
- ml: milliliter
