Narrative Paragraphs and Examples in Indonesian
In previous articles we have discussed type of paragraph type generally. In this discussion, we will describe more specifically about narrative paragraphs and examples. What is a narrative paragraph? What are the characteristics and types? We will discuss them one by one below.
Definition of Narrative Paragraph
word paragraph comes from language Greece namely: "paragraph" which means “to write beside” or “to write beside”. Paragraph is writing that has a purpose or idea. Paragraphs consist of ideas or ideas that are the main/core then added with several supporting sentences to further clarify the main idea. Paragraphs contain three to seven sentences, all of which are in the form of sentence singular meaning.
Narrative paragraph also called narrative paragraph is a writing/discourse that describes a series of events from time to time which is described in the order of beginning, middle and end.
Purpose of Narrative Paragraph
Writing narrative paragraphs has 2 objectives, namely:
- provide insight or information that can broaden the reader's knowledge
- provide an aesthetic experience
Narrative Paragraph Characteristics
According to Gorys Keraf (2000: 136) narrative paragraphs have the following characteristics:
- highlight the element of action or action
- arranged in chronological order
- answer the question "what happened?"
- have conflict
While Atar Semi (2003: 31) suggests more complete characteristics, namely:
- a story about an event or the author's experience
- The story conveyed can be in the form of events that really happened, mere imagination or a combination of reality and imagination
- have conflict
- have aesthetic value
- chronological order of events
Steps for Writing Narrative Paragraphs
In making a narrative paragraph, there are several writing steps so that the information provided is more conceptual and the plot is well structured so that it is not boring when read. The steps for writing a narrative paragraph are as follows:
- Determine the theme and message to be conveyed.
- Setting the target audience (eg teenagers, women, the elderly, etc.).
- Designing the main events, which are depicted in the plot scheme.
- Divide the event into 3 parts, namely the beginning, middle/development, and the end of the story.
- Breaking down the main events into more detailed events as a support story.
- Develop characters and character, setting and point of view.
- Understand the rules of punctuation that must be applied in the essay.
Types of Narrative Paragraphs
Narrative paragraphs are divided into 4 types, namely: (1) Informative Narrative Paragraphs, (2) Expository Narrative Paragraphs, (3) Artistic Narrative Paragraphs, and (4) Suggestive Narrative Paragraphs.
Informative Narrative Paragraph
Informative narrative paragraph is a paragraph/narrative essay that aims to convey information accurately to the targeted reader, whether about a thing, event or story someone.
Expository Narrative Paragraph
An expository narrative paragraph is a paragraph/narrative essay that aims to convey information about someone's story based on data in fact. This narrative essay contains elements of exposition on the concept of the story and its writing. The provisions of this exposition stipulate that the information provided must use logical language, based on actual facts, and without any suggestive (objective) elements.
Example:
Rani Jelita Sari M. is the youngest child from 6 siblings, born in Medan on September 6, 1990. Rani, as she is usually called, was born in a simple family. His father was a civil servant serving in the Ministry of Religion while his mother was a farmer. When Rani was born, her father had entered old age, which was 51 years. The father was diagnosed with pulmonary complications when Rani was very young. So no wonder, little Rani spent more of her childhood taking care of her father than playing with friends her age. Rani and her father's relationship is very close, not just a father-daughter relationship but is like two friends. When Rani turned 8 years old, her father's health condition worsened. Rani became increasingly absent from school because she accompanied her father who had to go in and out of the hospital. Moving from one hospital to another and going back and forth to call a private doctor at home became a normal thing for Rani and her family. Six months of struggling tirelessly and taking all available and possible paths, it turns out that Rani and her family have to accept the harshest reality. Rani's father died when Rani was not even 9 years old. His father's passing was Rani's worst nightmare, and caused a drastic change in her life. Rani who is cheerful and easy to get along with other people turns into a quiet and introverted Rani.
Artistic Narrative Paragraph
An artistic narrative paragraph is a paragraph/narrative essay that aims to convey a certain message to the reader. This paragraph uses logical language, based on actual facts and without any suggestive elements (objective statements).
Suggestive Narrative Paragraph
A suggestive narrative paragraph is a paragraph/narrative essay that aims to convey message certain information to the reader so that the reader seems to see, hear and feel involved in the story being conveyed. Suggestive narrative paragraphs tell about the author's imagination or imagination. The hallmark of this type of narrative paragraph is the presence of a suggestive element. Generally type paragraph This narrative is found in short stories, saga, fairy tales and novels.
Example:
A monkey prince fell in love with the royal crown princess who was across the forest. Every day he hung from one tree to another to reach the entrance of the princess's kingdom. He had kept his feelings for so long, until one day the monkey prince finally got up the courage to meet the princess. So that the crown princess was willing to meet and he was allowed to enter the royal palace area, the monkey prince then changed his form into a very handsome man. Finally he managed to establish a very close relationship with the crown princess and the entire royal family, until finally their wedding date was determined. Hearing the news, the competitors who also wanted to be the royal son-in-law tried to thwart the wedding plans. They began to find out the origin of the handsome prince who became the future son-in-law of the kingdom. After doing all the means and tricks, the competitors finally managed to dismantle it identity monkey prince. Unexpectedly, the wedding day which was actually the happiest day for the monkey prince turned out to be the end of his life journey. He was cruelly killed by royal soldiers after the king felt very upset and humiliated because he had been fooled and deceived by the monkey prince.
