Pingkan Folding Distance*
By: Sapardi Djoko Damono
It's over from hour Pingkan sat in front of the mirror. Every time he looks in the mirror, he remembers word his mother said that he had used the mirror since he was a teenager in Makassar. The reason his father brought the anti-object to Java was because Hartini had used it for decades. The mirror is a sacred object he said with a straight face, who has made your mother beautiful.
Before, Pingkan had never thought about it, but after an hour of silence in front of her, for the first time she imagined what her mother would look like before moving to Java. There was no mother's face in the mirror that afternoon, only her own face which was gradually becoming as old as her mother. He stared at her face for a long time and suddenly from inside the mirror saw his mother appear to open the bedroom door, standing staring at him without saying a word.
Pingkan turned her head, she saw that the figure in the mirror was gradually changing into her. Don't know what to say. Her mother? he asked. No answer. Get out of here, I don't know you. It was not clear to him whose voice he heard, his own voice or whose voice. He drew near to the figure, getting closer the blurry then back very slowly, through the door and disappeared. He opened the door. Mother! Only the sound behind the door now wide open, only the smell he had known since he was still in the womb, the scent that since he became an adult released from the womb he had longed for.
She entered the room, watching her own figure still in the mirror gradually turn into a young woman who picks up one or two cherry blossoms that fall before the day along the river that flows very quietly in Kyoto.
Pingkan heard a voice coming from the river bank, screaming for her to get on the road. It's not too late yet. The smell he had known since he was in the womb was everywhere. Never had he felt so happy, unable to distinguish between the past and the present, the san and the here. Pingkan often wants to close her eyes and ears so that virtual boundaries don't exist, so that everything is here and is happening right now. With great care he slashed time and folded distance. A voice did its best to call him louder.
