Correct Use of Colons according to EYD
Yesterday we discussed use of question marks and exclamation points and use of single quotation marks and quotation marks. In use of punctuation, there are other types of punctuation. For this reason, this discussion will explain the correct use of colons according to EYD. Where this sign is very commonly used in a sentence.
The colon is one of the punctuation marks used in sentence which is denoted by (: ). The sign (: ) is a colon symbol that has the same size in the middle of the line vertical the same one.
Use of Colon
In the EYD (Spelling Enhanced) guidelines, a colon is used:
1. At the end of a complete statement where the sentence is followed by a series or explanation.
Example:
- Towards school, we need stationery: books, pencils, erasers, sharpeners and rulers.
- This holiday, we have to make a choice between: malaysia or singapore.
- Mother went to the supermarket to buy groceriesingredient for cooking: sugar, salt, cooking oil, soy sauce and others.
- Rindang and Uncle went to the fields to harvest the secondary crops: soybeans, peanuts, beans and corn.
- University Indonesia has several faculties: mathematics, medicine, pharmacy, engineering, psychology and law.
2. After word or expressions that require an explanation of an event.
Example:
- Head Village: H. M. Machfud
- Head of BPD: Sugianto, SE. MM
- Village Secretary: Reni Aprillia, S.AB
- Village Midwife: Dwi Gitayanti, S.Keb

3. In a script after the word that shows the character in the dialogue/conversation.
Example:
- Gisel: Ra, there will be a national exam soon. Are you ready yet?
- Tiara: Yes ready or not ready to be ready. Let's just live it.
- Gisel: I'm afraid that later I won't be able to answer.
- Tiara: That's why we prepare from now.
- Gisel: If you study, it's done. I've been practicing a lot.
- Tiara: Not only studying, but also mental preparation. You have to be confident to face the national exam.
- Gisel: That's right. But, what if it's hard?
- Tiara: The important thing is that we try first. We pray that we can do all the national exam questions.
- Gisel: I hope so.
4. Between volumes/numbers and pages.

5. In the scriptures, among Letter/chapters and verses.
Example:
- Surah Al-Maidah: 20 – 25

6. Title and sub-title of an article / essay / paper / paper.
Example:

7. Name of city and publisher in the bibliography.
