Types of Acronyms in Indonesian
Every day, we often hear or even mention an acronym. The word acronym may sound a little foreign to some people. What if we replace it with abbreviations? Common isn't it? We often encounter or use acronyms or abbreviations in a word. ASI said, not foreign is not it. ASI is included in an acronym or abbreviation. For more details what is an acronym? Below we will describe the meaning and types of acronyms in Indonesian.
Definition of Acronym
According to the Big Indonesian Dictionary (KBBI, 1994:18), acronyms are abbreviations in the form of a combination of letters or syllables or other parts written and pronounced as a natural word (for example: major general for major generals, inspection for surprise inspections, missiles for guided missiles, and so on). etc).
A good acronym is an acronym that is neither too short nor too long. Because acronyms that are too short are at risk of having similarities with other acronyms but having different meanings. While acronyms that are too long will be inconvenient or difficult to pronounce.
Acronym Formation Rules
In forming an acronym there are two important things that must be considered in order to avoid complications with other acronyms, namely:
- easy to pronounce
- the words used in accordance with the meaning represented
- the number of syllables in the acronym is not more than 3 (three) syllables
- according to the pattern word in language Indonesia, which has harmony between vowels and consonants, so it is easy to remember
A philosopher of language, mathematics and logic named Wittgenstein (1889-1951) expressed his opinion about the formation of acronyms in terms of the perspective of language ethics, that speech is a moral act, so that the right words are those based on ethics, morality, and logic the good one.
