Lakes and Types*

A lake is a collection of water in a particular basin, which is usually in the form of a bowl. Lake water supply comes from from rainfall, rivers, and springs and groundwater. Lakes are permanent or remain watery all year round. However, if the source of water that fills the lake comes from only one, the lake is temporary or periodic, so that at a certain time the lake will dry up.

According to the type of water, lakes can be divided into two types, namely freshwater lakes and saltwater lakes. A freshwater lake is a lake whose water source comes from water rain. Many freshwater lakes are formed in areas with high rainfall or humid (wet). Indonesia is one of the countries that has many freshwater lakes. An example of a freshwater lake in Indonesia is Lake Toba, which is located on Samosir Island, North Sumatra.

In contrast to freshwater lakes that are permanent or permanent, saltwater lakes are temporary lakes. Saltwater lakes are generally found in semiarid and arid areas. The evaporation process that occurs in saltwater lakes is very strong and has no output flow. This lake has a high salt content, so if the lake is dry, it will leave a layer of salt at the bottom of the lake. Examples of lakes with high salt content include the Great Salt Lake which has a salt content of 18.6% and the Dead Sea which has a salt content of 32%.
