In a place in West Sumatra called Sungaibatang, Maninjau, Minang Tribe, there lived a family who consists of a mother named Mariati, a son named Asri, and a daughter named Asnah. Mrs. Mariati is a kind mother and loves her family very much. Asri is the son of Mrs. Mariati who is patient, loving, educated, and obedient to her parents. Meanwhile, Asnah is a daughter who was adopted by Mrs. Mariati and is a girl who is virtuous, friendly, forgiving, obedient to her parents, and somewhat introverted. Even though Asnah is the adopted daughter of Mrs. Mariati, Mrs. Mariati loves Asnah as much as her own child. Likewise Asnah, she really loves Mrs. Mariati like her own mother. Also living with them is a maid named Mak Cik Lia. They live in a gadang house and live a life full of love.
Asri and Asnah are also very close as brothers and sisters. They were always honest with each other except for one thing. Asnah keeps her affection for Asri as a lover a secret. One day, Asri who was studying in Batavia decided to return home to West Sumatra. Asri's return is a form of Asri's obedience to his mother who asked him to stay in the village and not continue his education in Batavia. However, Asri's return also gives Asnah its own anxiety because she secretly loves her adopted sister.
After arriving in her hometown, Asri immediately got a job as a clerk in a local government agency. This certainly made his mother and Asnah happy. Mrs. Mariati also asked Asri to immediately find a life partner and get married. Asri also complied with her mother's request and started looking for a suitable woman to be a life partner.
