Types of Brackets and Their Use in Sentences
In writing sentences, of course, there are several guidelines that must be followed, one of which is: use of punctuation. The use of punctuation marks must of course be considered because the use of punctuation is regulated in EYD (Spelling Enhanced). Some rules of punctuation, namely the use of periods, use of commas, the use of exclamation marks, the use of question marks, and also the use of brackets.
Parentheses are often found in sentences. The brackets are written in pairs. There are 4 types of brackets, namely square brackets, arch brackets, angle brackets, and curly brackets. Which in this discussion, we will discuss all types of brackets and their use in sentences.
Types of Brackets
Parentheses are punctuation marks used in writing sentences to separate words into other words. There are 4 types of brackets including the following:
- Square brackets []
- Arch brackets ()
- Curly brackets { }
- Angle brackets < >
In its use parentheses are commonly used in writing sentencelanguage Indonesia, namely the arch brackets and also the square brackets. Curly brackets and angle brackets are not used very often in Indonesian writing. Therefore, we focus more on discussing this type of parentheses to the use of curved brackets and square brackets.
Brackets ()
The use of brackets according to EYD includes several functions. The following are guidelines for the use of brackets according to EYD, namely as follows:
1. Parentheses are used to enclose information or explanations
The function of the first parenthesis is that it can be used to enclose an explanation or explanation. The way it is written is that the first thing that will be explained then is the abbreviation of the thing described earlier. Example:
- The first stage in management Identity Card (KTP) what is missing is to report the loss to the office Sector Police (Police) or Big City Resort Police (Polrestabes).
- World Health Organization (WHO) is a organization world that is engaged in the health sector which is under the auspices of the United Nations (UN), as for the purpose of The World Health Organization (WHO) is to ensure that everyone can have access to health services.
- PT Train FireIndonesia (KAI) on Eid in 2017, 379 trips have been prepared for travelers who use train, because this year around 5.8 million people choose to use the train when going home Eid.
2. Parentheses are used to enclose information or explanations that are not part of the subject of the conversation
The second function of parentheses is that brackets can be used to enclose additional information or explanations. The additional information is placed in brackets where the additional information is not included in the main part. Example:
- Lots traveler those who visit the city of Bandung take the time to shop at Cibaduyut (one of the largest shoe centers in Indonesia).
- One of the differences between organelle cells in plants and animals is seen from cell wall (see picture 1.2)
- The development of developed and developing countries in the world (see table 2.3), from the table it is clear how the development of each country in the world is.
3. Parentheses are used to enclose letters or words whose presence in the text can be omitted
If in a text there are letters or words that can be omitted, then the brackets can be used to write them down. Example:
- (City) Bogor is known as the city rain, because Bogor has high rainfall.
- Every August 17, many climbers from various cities throughout Indonesia climb (Mount) Semeru.
- Cocaine (a) is an absorption word that comes from the word cocaine.
4. Parentheses are used to enclose letters or numbers that have a detailed description sequence
In addition to the 3 functions above, brackets have a function to enclose letters or numbers that explain the details that have been arranged. Example:
- The sciences studied in Biology include (1) Anatomy, (2) Botany, (3) Ecology, (4) Physiology.
- For next week's skill assignment, the teacher asked us to prepare some equipment, such as (1) ice cream sticks, (2) glue, (3) scissors, (4) markers, (5) glitter, (6) colorful paper. .
- Mother told Mita to go to the shop to buy some things, namely:
- 1) Detergent
- 2) Toothpaste
- 3) Rice
- 4) Salt

In addition to the curved brackets, there are also square brackets. Square brackets are used in brackets word, phrases, letters or sentences. Square brackets have several functions. Here's the explanation.
1. Square brackets are used as an indicator if there is a writing error in the sentence
Square brackets are used as markers if there is a writing error in the sentence, so with the presence of these brackets can be used as an addition to a sentence and see which one corrected. Square brackets contain some corrections if there is an error in a sentence. Consider the following example:
- Nathan left berkujung to his grandfather's house in the village.
- Nathan left go[n]jung to his grandfather's house in village
- I'm really sorry for what I did wrong.
- I really ask [Sorry] for the mistakes I made.
- I accidentally saw the mother give it to the scavenger.
- I accidentally saw the mother give [something] to the scavenger.
2. Square brackets are used as an adverb in an explanatory sentence that already exists in arch brackets.
The second function of square brackets is used as a bracket for an explanation in an explanatory sentence which already exists in an arch bracket. To make it easier for you to understand, consider the example below.
- The decline in reading interest this year was approximately 20 percent from the previous year (The graph of the decline in reading interest is written in chapter 2 [see page 25]).
- The discussion of branching has been discussed in the previous chapter (Discussion of branching [see page 76]).
- Economic growth in the second quarter experienced a very drastic jump (see table and data statistics [attached separately]).
The difference between the arch brackets and the square brackets is different from the function in writing a sentence. Arch brackets have the function of flanking additional information or sorting letters, while square brackets have the function of writing errors in a sentence.
