Stanzas and sonnets are two of them new kinds of poetry based on its shape. Stanza – or what is usually called octave – is a poem in which one stanza must consist of eight lines. Meanwhile, a sonnet is a poem that has a total of sixteen lines.

Especially for sonnets, this one poem has a number of special patterns. Some of these patterns include: 4-4-3-3 (the first two stanzas contain four lines each, and the remaining two contain three lines each); 4-4-4-2 (the first three stanzas contain four lines each, and the last stanza contains two lines); and a one-verse pattern containing fourteen lines.

To find out what these two types of poetry look like, here are some examples of them which can be listened to below!

A. Stanza's New Poetry Sample*

Example 1:

Blackbird
Works: WS. Rendra

Sweet black bird from my heart
how nimble and longing lonely serene.
The blackbird is the fruit of the tree.
The black bird on the chest is a flower.
He drinks at the time he loves
he sleeps on the swaying leaves.
He is not from sorrow even though he is a black bird.
Blackbird is my hidden love for you.

Example 2:

Sad Song
Works: WS. Rendra

He came without knocking and embraced me
as for he who is cunning called sorrow.
It's an orange moon, hell, the sky of my chest
as for him curse called sorrow.
It's a sandalwood coffin and purple silk flowers
as for the sweet one called sorrow.
It's just a joke after a long kiss
As for him, the unfortunate one is called grief.

B. Examples of New Poetry Sonnets**

Example 1:

Sonnet: X
By: Sapardi Djoko Damono

who scratch in the blue sky
who hacked in the cloud then
who crystallized in that mist kabut
who blinks in the withered flower
who digests in purple
who breathes in the beat of time
Who flashes every time I open the door
who melts under my sight
who is spoken in the gaps of my words
who complains in my lonely shadows
who came to pick me up hunting
Who suddenly removed my veil
who exploded inside of me
: Who am I

(1968)

Example 2:

Sonnet: Y
By: Sapardi Djoko Damono

even though we often meet
among the people visiting the grave
in between the blue sounds
gray and purple shimmer
even though I often remember you
between words-word the old one is gone
locked in the shadows
gloomy revenge
even though I often greet you
at every intersection weather
turned into fiery red
in dizziness
: I don't know why I miss
stuttering nervously in the waiting room

(1968)
