Respiratory System in Birds (Most Complete Discussion) – Every living creature has a respiratory system that varies according to its type. In principle, breathing in vertebrates and humans is the same, but the respiratory structure is different so the mechanism is different.

Respiratory System in Birds (Most Complete Discussion)

To study the respiratory system in birds, we can take the example of pigeons. The respiratory system consists of the nostrils, trachea (windpipe), bronchi (windpipe branches) and lungs. At the base of the bronchial tree there is also a vocal organ called a siring.

Respiratory System in Birds

When flying, bird breathing is assisted by air bladders. Air sacs are bags with very thin and elastic membrane walls. These air pockets are located between the muscles, bones and muscles of the body.

When flying, a bird's wings are moved by the pectoral muscles. The activity of these chest muscles will interfere with the process of air intake by the lungs (inspiration). Respiratory air enters through the nose then into the trachea and bronchi to the lungs and flows into the air sacs.

Therefore, oxygen is taken from the air contained in the air bladders. Air from the bladder is channeled to the lungs by pressing the bladder (expiration). In the lungs oxygen absorption occurs again. So, oxygen absorption can take place twice, namely during inspiration And expiration.

At time inspiration: Air enters the lungs and air sacs.

At time expiration: Air flows from the air sacs in the lungs.

When birds fly without flapping their wings, they have the opportunity to refill their air pockets. When birds land, they breathe using their lungs. The course of breathing in flying or non-flying birds is as follows:

Air enters through the nose → throat → lungs → air sacs → lungs → out through the nose

Respiratory System in Birds

In general, birds have five pairs of air bladders which are named according to their location, namely:

  1. A pair of air sacs at the base of the neck;
  2. A pair of anterior chest air bladders;
  3. There is a pair of posterior thoracic air bladders;
  4. A pair of abdominal air sacs; And
  5. A pair of intercollar air sacs branch out to form air sacs under the upper arm bones.

That's our brief explanation this time regarding Respiratory System in Birds (Most Complete Discussion), Hopefully this is useful and can broaden our knowledge, especially about birds. That's all, thank you 🙂
