Ant Metamorphosis: Definition, Types of Metamorphosis and Stages
Ant Metamorphosis: Definition, Types of Metamorphosis and Stages - What are the stages of Ant Metamorphosis like? In the previous discussion Seputartahu.co.id already discussed about Metamorphosis is: Definition, Phases, Types and Examples This time we will discuss the specifics of metamorphosis in ants and the things that surround it. Let's look at the discussion together in the article below to understand it better.
Ant Metamorphosis: Definition, Types of Metamorphosis and Stages
Metamorphosis comes from the Greek word "Greek". Meta (between, around, after), morphe (form), osis (part of), so metamorphosis is a change in form during postembryonic development. There are quite a lot of animals that experience metamorphosis, including frogs, butterflies and ants.
In other words, metamorphosis is a change in body shape and habits during the phases of an animal's development cycle. There are two types of metamorphosis that can be distinguished, namely perfect metamorphosis and imperfect metamorphosis.
Types of Animal Metamorphosis
Each of these types has different characteristics and stages. For further details, here are the types of metamorphosis in animals and their characteristics.
Complete Metamorphosis.
The first type is complete metamorphosis. In general, the characteristic of complete metamorphosis is that the animal will experience four phases (egg, nymph, pupa, imago). It should be noted that usually complete metamorphosis is marked by changes in body shape in insects with quite visible differences. When compared with incomplete metamorphosis, the resistance that animals that undergo complete metamorphosis have to endure is much longer.
In short, after the egg hatches into a larva, it will consume more food than the previous phase. The amount of food consumed will be useful during the pupal or cocoon phase. Please note that in this phase the animal will tend not to eat for quite a long time. After the pupal stage or process is complete, the next step is the imago or adult individual phase.
Some of the characteristics of animals that undergo complete metamorphosis include:
- There is a very significant difference in shape between the pupa phase and the imago phase.
- Animals that experience complete metamorphosis will definitely feel like they are in the pupa or cocoon phase.
-
Incomplete Metamorphosis
Next is incomplete metamorphosis or commonly known as hemimetabola. It should be noted that the main characteristic of this type of incomplete metamorphosis is a change in body shape in the nymph and imago phases. However, usually in the imago phase the signs are no longer visible and become more prominent. Apart from that, animals that do not experience the incomplete metamorphosis stage will also experience the pupa/cocoon phase.
In other terms, if identified from its characteristics, incomplete metamorphosis can be called a growth process in different animals. The process of animal growth here does not change shape significantly.
The following are some of the characteristics that occur in the incomplete metamorphosis stage, namely:
- Changes in animal body shape occur in the nymph phase. In this imago phase, animals tend not to be very striking, with only slight differences.
- The next characteristic is that it does not experience a pupal or cocoon phase.
Stages of Ant Metamorphosis Phases
Ants are insects that have a small shape, although their coloring is quite complicated. This small creature has undergone many developments and changes during its lifetime, from egg to adult ant.
Ants experience complete metamorphosis, because they have 4 stages, namely starting with egg, larva, pupa/pupa and adult/imago. These four stages take between 5 – 10 weeks.
The following are the stages of ant metamorphosis:
Egg Stage
The initial stage of ants begins with eggs. If the egg is fertilized, the offspring are diploid females, otherwise they will be haploid males.
Larval Stage
The eggs then hatch into larvae, the small eggs hatch without eyes and legs into worm-like larvae. Most ant larvae rarely move and are cared for and fed by worker ants.
The food given to the larvae is called trophallaxis, which is a unique process where an ant regurgitates liquid food in its mouth. Adult ants also do this.
Larvae, especially at later stages, can also receive solid food such as prey pieces, trophic eggs, and seeds provided by worker ants. The larvae grow through a series of 4 to 5 molting stages and enter the pupal stage.
Pupa
If the larvae are large, metamorphosis will become pupae. The pupa looks like an ant imago. The difference is that its wings and antennae are folded into its body.
In some species, the pupa is covered by a cocoon that protects it. Pupae have not been found in other species. During this time, the pupa turns into an adult ant.
Imago ants (adult)
After all the stages above have been completed, the pupa finally emerges as an adult ant. Adult ants can belong to one of three castes: queens, workers, or female workers.
