Understanding Lakes and Lake Types (Most Complete Discussion)
You can definitely imagine what the lake is like, you must have imagined lots of water, a very big pool and so on. But do you know what a real lake is? Let's look at the following discussion.
Definition of Lake
Lake is a depression on the surface of the earth where the amount of water entering is greater than the water coming out. Lakes get water from rainfall, rivers and groundwater. These three sources together can fill and provide water supply to the lake.
Based on the process of occurrence, lakes are divided into two, namely natural lakes and artificial lakes.
Natural Lake
Natural lakes are formed naturally from natural energy without any human intervention. Natural lakes themselves can be divided into several types, including:
1. Tectonic Lakes
It is a lake that occurred due to tectonic movements which gave rise to the shape of a slenk/graben (fault valley) or faults flanked by horsts (fault crests) and receive sufficient amounts of water (rainwater, rivers, springs water). For example: Lake Maninjau, Lake Tempe, Lake Poso, and Lake Tondano.
2. Volcanic Lake
This lake is a former volcanic eruption that caused a depression. If the bottom of the basin is covered with volcanic material, the rainwater collected at the top of the mountain becomes a lake. For example: Lake Maar, Caldera Lake, Lake Batur, and Lake Kalimutu.
3. Volcano-Tectonic Lake
It is a lake that occurred due to tectonic movements and volcanic eruptions. For example: Lake Toba.
4. Glacier Lake
It is a lake where areas that were previously traversed by glaciers have become dry and filled with water. These lakes are only found in North America, the border of Canada and the United States. Examples: Lake Superior and Lake Michigan.
5. Dolina Lake
It is a lake found in the Horst area and is generally a small lake that is temporary. For example: the lake around Gunung Kidul.
6. Horseshoe Lake
It is a lake that was formed because of sediment in meander rivers when river flow decreases.
Artificial Lake
Artificial lakes or better known as reservoirs, are made for a specific purpose, meaning that the construction of the reservoir has been planned and adjusted for use, such as irrigation, flood prevention, power generation, fisheries, transportation, etc. For example: Jatiluhur Reservoir, Cirata Reservoir and many more.
