Definition of Reptiles, Structure, Body Functions and Characteristics – Living creatures that live on this earth have various types and habitats. Some are in water, air, land and some are in the ground.

Definition of Reptiles, Structure, Body Functions and Characteristics

Living creatures in water are generally different from creatures on land and vice versa. But there are also creatures that can live in two realms, such as reptiles. Reptiles of their type have the ability to live in two realms, namely land and water.

Every living creature has body parts, each part of the body has its own function and use. As explained above, reptiles also have body parts that can provide their respective uses, which will be explained as follows:

Understanding Reptiles

A reptile is an organism that has a backbone or is a vertebrate organism that can move by crawling and has four legs on its body.

The body anatomy of this reptile is scaly so that it covers all parts of its body. Apart from that, this animal has cold blood or what is called poikilotherm. According to experts, reptiles are organisms that can survive in dry areas for the first time when they were discovered by experts.

Reptile Body Structure

Reptiles generally have scales that cover their entire body. The reptile's body has short legs and a long tail on its body.

However, there are also those who don't have legs for walking so they walk by wiggling their bodies and tails in unison. The way to move it is by contracting all the muscles between the two sides of the spine. This is done alternately regularly.

Snake

Snakes are reptiles that do not have legs and use muscles to enable them to walk. They also have deadly weapons or poison to kill their enemies and to catch their prey. The tools or weapons he has are venom or poison and coils from the body which will be directed at enemies and also their prey.

Some examples of snakes that can use venom or poison as a tool to paralyze their prey and enemies are king cobras and vipers and there are many more.

And when they see an enemy or prey approaching, they will administer their venom or poison. By pecking or biting the body of the enemy or prey. And some can spray deadly venom or poison.

The venom from snakes has very strong poison levels, it is even said that it can kill an elephant. The way this poison works, it doesn't take long to paralyze its prey because of the venom or poison it contains give it will be able to work immediately, even if only in a matter of seconds and can directly attack the neural tissue the prey.

Apart from venomous snakes, there are also snakes that use their body parts or coils to kill or catch their enemies and prey, for example boa snakes and pythons.

Both types use their body parts to kill their prey and enemies by wrapping their bodies around their victims. Because it does not have deadly venom or poison like cobra or viper. But this body coil cannot be underestimated because it is strong and can even crush every body of the enemy and its prey in just a matter of seconds.

This species of snake can eat its prey even if it is more than twice its body size. This is because the body structure of the jaws found in snakes can expand elastically to a certain size.

Lizard

Next there are lizards which are a type of reptile that has strong legs and a tail on its body. Lizards have a kind of self-defense system which we call the autotomy system.

The autotomy system is a self-defense system that can be done by removing parts of their body if they feel threatened by an enemy. The type of lizard that does this is the lizard which will let go of its tail when it is experiencing difficult or dangerous situations.

The next type of lizard has the ability to camouflage or change its body color. Which is in accordance with what is around him which is useful for being able to trick enemies and their prey.

The color produced by the body is adjusted to the surrounding environment so that it does not change can be seen clearly when you think about the animal and the object in it surroundings. Reptiles that can do this are chameleons.

Reptile Body Functions

The reptile's body has many uses and functions of its own. Reptiles of this type have tails, legs, skin pigment, scales and venom or poison. The scales on its body are used to protect its body when it is exposed to surrounding temperatures, such as when it is really dry.

This reptile's feet are used to walk and each toe has nails as sharp weapons. The point is to increase the strength of the reptile's body when it grips its enemy or prey.

Skin pigment is a special ability that only chameleons have. Which has a way of defending itself by camouflaging itself like objects around it. So that when the enemies and prey come, they don't know where the chameleon is.

The tail in reptiles can be used to assist in the process of movement, as is done by snakes which use their body muscles to continue moving forward.

And the last one is venom or poison which is found in several common types of reptiles such as snakes, Komodo dragons and lizards. This poison contains deadly poison which can be used to kill opponents and silence their prey in a matter of seconds.

Characteristics of Reptiles

Living creatures such as reptiles have several body characteristics that are unique to other vertebrate groups. The characteristics include:

  1. The reptile's body has dry scales which are made from horny substance. Its function is to provide protection from a dry environment.
  2. Reptiles can walk by slithering or by placing their entire body face down on the ground. But in the case of snakes, they move by using the muscles in their body alternately.
  3. Reptiles have two pairs of legs that have strong claws. The difference with turtles is that their legs are flattened so they are shaped like paddles so they can swim faster.
  4. Reptiles reproduce in two ways, namely by laying eggs or oviparous and giving birth by laying eggs. Or what is called Examples of reptiles that reproduce by laying eggs are turtles, tortoises and lizards. An example of an egg-laying or ovoviviparous reptile is a snake.
