Understanding PMI (Indonesian Red Cross) and its complete history – Humans in general and by nature are social creatures who need other humans to be able to live on this earth. And a human cannot stand alone if there is only one person.
Understanding PMI (Indonesian Red Cross) and its complete history
Many people nowadays do not socialize with other citizens which makes people act individually. The longer the distance given by one individual to another individual, the greater the distance.
But some people form associations in which there are people who care about the environment and society at large. This association is called PMI. To find out more about PMI, it will be explained as follows.
Understanding PMI
PMI or Indonesian Red Cross is a neutral and independent organization in Indonesia and operates in the humanitarian sector. PMI was formed on the basis of the Indonesian nation itself even though it was influenced by the Red Cross whose attitude was universal. The formation of PMI started from the encouragement of the human spirit and based on national principles.
When carrying out activities, PMI always maintains its principles, namely humanity, neutrality, volunteerism, independence, universality and unity. Currently, PMI has 33 regional PMIs and 408 PMI branches throughout Indonesia. PMI's main office is on Jalan Jend Gatot Subroto, Jakarta.
History of PMI
PMI or Indonesian Red Cross was formed on October 12 1873. At that time it was still under the Dutch colonial government and at that time the name of the Indonesian Red Cross was called Nederlands Rode Kruis Afdeling Indie (NERKAI). But when Japan entered Indonesia and occupied the NERKAI government, it was dissolved. After the Indonesian nation became independent, the PMI was re-formed on September 3 1945. At that time President Soekarno chose Dr. Buntaran who at that time was the Minister of Health to form the national Red Cross.
The National Red Cross consists of 5 committee members, namely.
- R Mochtar (chairman),
- Djuhana,
- Bahder Djohan,
- Sitanala,
- Marzuki.
Preparations had been made to form PMI and on September 17 1945 PMI was officially formed. That date is called PMI day.
PMI has social and humanitarian duties such as dealing with disasters, community services, first aid training, and helping provide blood donors. From the basis of humanity, PMI has helped many people in need. As in the disaster management section, PMI provides community services by providing relief and evacuation services health and medical teams, searching, providing public kitchens, providing food packages, field hospitals, or donating clothes.
There were many natural disasters that made PMI automatically move to provide assistance, including the Bantul earthquake, Aceh tsunami and other natural disasters.
