Understanding Routers, Modems, Switches, and Bridges and Their Functions – In carrying out daily activities we use internet services using computers, laptops, notebooks, tablets and smartphones.
By using the electronic tools above, we can use them to access the internet network. When using the internet network, we are not aware that we are using additional tools, namely tools to connect our electronic devices to the internet network.
Understanding Routers, Modems, Switches, and Bridges and Their Functions
On computers, in particular, routers, modems and switches are used. To understand what a Router, Modem, and Switch are and their functions, they will be explained as follows:
Understanding Routers
A router is a network device that works at OSI Layer 3, at the Network Layer or on a device A computer whose job is to convey data packets to the internet network until they reach their location the goal. This layer is known as network addressing which uses IP addresses and routers can also provide them an important role by being a liaison or forwarder of data packets between two network segments or can more.
Router Functions
A router functions as a connecting device between two or more computer networks which is useful for forwarding data packets from one network to another network. What differentiates a router from a switch is that a switch is a connector that can connect several devices that can form a LAN network.
Understanding Modem
A modem or what is called a Modulator Demodulator is a device that has the function of converting analog signals into digital signals and vice versa.
Modem Function
The function of a modem is that it is a connector that connects computers to the internet network.
Understanding Switches
A switch is a computer network device that works at OSI Layer 2 and Data Link Layer. The switch has the task of being a connector or concentrator in a computer network. Not only that, the switch can recognize MAC addresses which can sort out a data packet that will be forwarded or continued to its destination.
Switch Function
The switch has its own function, the function of the switch is:
- Can be a connector for UPT cables between one computer and another computer.
- Become a repeater or signal booster
- Can do routing, in general switches can do routing. Routing is useful as a stepping stone for connecting with other computers using a LAN or Local Area Network.
Definition of Bridge
A bridge is a network component that is used to expand a network or create a network. Network bridges can operate in the data-link layers of the OSI model. Not only that, bridges can also be used to connect two different network media. For example, UTP cable media is connected to a fiber optic cable or two different network architectures.
Bridge Function
Bridges have the function of being able to divide a network so that it can become a network. Bidge can also organize information on both sides of the network so that it can run regularly.
