Rib Bones: Definition, Number, Structure and Function

The body structure certainly has its own function, structure and duties. Likewise, the ribs function as protectors of vital internal organs such as the liver, heart, lungs and so on. The following is an explanation of the ribs.

Definition of rib bones

In anatomy, ribs or ribs (costae) are long bones that curve and form the rib cage. The function of the ribs is to protect the chest (thorax), lungs, heart, liver and other internal organs in the chest cavity.

In mammals, the ribs are located only in the chest. However, the location of the ribs in reptiles is sometimes from the neck to the sacrum. Ribs are also found in several types of fish, which can have up to 4 ribs on each backbone.

Every human being has ribs, both men and women. The rib cage consists of 12 pairs, each left and right totaling 24 ribs. With the ribs, other important parts such as the heart, liver and lungs are safe. The ribs act like a cage located in the chest.

It's easy to find out where this bone is, by feeling along the side and front of your chest and a few inches below your heart. If we breathe deeply it will be very easy for us to feel the ribs in the front of our body.

The first seven pairs of ribs attach to the front of the chest, the strong bones are located in the middle of the chest and the remaining sets of ribs do not attach to the sternum directly. The next 3 pairs are located on the cartilage of the ribs, the last two sets of ribs are called floating ribs because they are not connected to the sternum of the ribs. However, we don't need to worry because the ribs remain attached to the body.

The rib cage is divided into 3 (three) parts, including:

Fake Ribs

This rib consists of 3 pairs, the false ribs are very shorter than the true ribs. This bone is directly related to the spinal column. Meanwhile, the three ends of the front bones are united by cartilage which is then attached to one point on the sternum.

True Ribs

True ribs have 7 (seven) pairs. The true ribs are located at the back and are directly connected to the spinal column. Meanwhile, the front end is connected to the sternum with the help of cartilage.

Floating Bones

There are 2 (two) pairs of floating bones. The floating ribs are the same as the true bones, namely they are located at the very back which is connected to the vertebrae. However, the front end is free or not connected to the rest of the bone.

Rib Cage Understanding the Number of Structures and Their Functions

Rib Cage Function

The main functions of the ribs themselves include the following:

As a protector of the heart, liver and lungs

The main function of the ribs is to protect the important organs in our body, especially the organs in the chest such as the heart, lungs and liver. As we know, these organs are very important for human survival. With ribs that form a nest, it protects the 3 body organs.

Helps Respiration

The next function is that the ribs help our breathing when the intercostal muscles raise and lower the ribs, facilitating and exhaling.

Apart from that, the ribs also have a framework for the work of the chest, back and abdominal muscles. The upper shoulder girdle can also be attached, the diaphragm is attached to the lower border of the ribs. Without ribs we cannot breathe smoothly and without ribs there is no protection for the important organs in our body.

That's the explanation about Rib Bones: Definition, Number, Structure and Function. Hopefully it can be useful and increase your knowledge. Thanks.
