Difference between Ethics and Morals: Definition and Types
Etymologically, the words ethics and morals initially had the same meaning or in other words were synonyms. The differences between the words ethics and morals were initially only different in origin, one comes from Latin and the other comes from Greek.
If you look at history, the word moral comes from the words moralis, mos, mores or which means custom and habits. Mores itself, when translated into Greek, means ethikos, we know that ethikos is the origin of the word that predates moralis.
Understanding Ethics
Ethics is a norm or regulation that is used as a guideline for behavior in society which is related to the good and bad qualities of a person.
Etymologically, the origin of the word Ethics comes from the Ancient Greek word "Ethikos" which means emerging from a habit. From this explanation it can be said that Ethics has a Normative point of view where the object is humans and their behavior.
Characteristics of Ethics
There are several characteristics that are used to distinguish Ethics from other types of norms, namely:
- Ethics will continue even if no one else sees it.
- This norm is absolute or absolute.
- In ethics there is a point of view that is seen from the human mind.
- In ethics, it is closely related to human actions or behavior.
Types of Ethics

Philosophical Ethics
In general, Philosophical Ethics is an ethic that originates from the activities and ways of thinking carried out by humans. This type of ethics is divided into two forms, namely:
Empirical, namely a branch of philosophy that discusses things that exist.
Non-Empirical, namely the branch of philosophy that tries to get through something that already exists, such as asking what is behind all the symptoms of problems that already exist.
Theological Ethics
In general, we can find Theological Ethics in every religion. For example, in Christianity, Theological Ethics is a type of ethics that originates from presuppositions regarding God or the Divine.
Understanding Morals
Morals are knowledge or insight regarding civilized human character. Morals also mean good teachings, bad actions and behavior. Moralization is a description of views and teachings about good actions and behavior. Demoralization is moral damage.
The term moral comes from the Latin word mores, which means custom or way of life. (Gunarsa, 1986) Morals are basically a series of values regarding various kinds of behavior that must be adhered to. (Shaffer, 1979) Morals are norms and institutions that regulate individual behavior in relation to society.
Various Kinds of Morals
Morals will be divided into several types, namely as follows:
- Divine Morals, namely one of the morals related to religious matters based on certain teachings.
- Moral Morals, namely one of the morals related to decency that is adhered to by the local community.
- Ideology is a moral that is related to the national spirit in realizing the ideals of the nation and state.
- Moral Discipline and Law, are all matters relating to ethical codes and also applicable legal rules.
Differences About Morals and Ethics
More clearly the differences are as follows:
- Morals are absolute obligations that humans must have, while ethics are not absolute but it is better if they have them
- Ethics is less appropriate if it is said about someone who does good deeds because ethics is a study, while morals are more appropriate, because morals are more directed towards human nature.
- Morals are normative-imperative in nature while ethics are normative-systematic (philosophical)
- Most lower middle class people have morals but rarely pay attention to ethics. Ethics is usually only thought about by the government, especially the DPR, that's why they make regulations.
