Poetry is: Definition, Characteristics, Properties, Types and Examples

According to KBBI Poetry is a form of literary work that is organized and bound in lines. The KKBI explains that poetry is a literary composition that is very dominant in sound similarity, contrast, synchrony of language sounds, and similarities.

Poetry is a form of literary work whose presentation is made using regular and bound lines. This poem places great importance on the harmony of language sounds, both the similarity of sounds and contrast.

Some say that poetry is a similarity of sounds, this similarity is found in sentences or words at the beginning, in the middle or at the end of sentences or words. Even though rhyme is not a special requirement for old poetry, the influence of rhyme is very binding on the form and choice of words in the poem.

Poetry is a type of poetry that is not bound by rules. Sajak is included in Malay poetry. Which means we are not tied to every word, so we can freely write about poetry. For this reason, we always hear free verse. Poetry is a new poetry that is free from rules in the formation of lines, words, lines and rhythm.

In another opinion, poetry is defined as poetry that is not tied to its words, so that it can be written freely. So we often hear the term free verse.

Types of Poetry

Types of Poetry Based on Position

Based on its position, poetry is divided into 2 (two) types, namely:

Early Rhymes

The initial rhyme is the matching of the sounds of the syllables that are located at the beginning of the word. The following is an example of an early poem:

Not me...
It's not my distrust of you
But I'm scared
It's not death that worries me
But separation scares me
Not sharing my love
But took love away from me

Final Rhyme

Final rhyme is an adjustment to the sound of a syllable located at the end of a word. The following is an example of an end poem:

Prostration

Prayer mats cover my skin
The cold doesn't penetrate my bones
In my humility
I pray to You my Lord
Forgive all my sins
Erase all my mistakes
Always guide me
So that my wish can be achieved
Siratal mustaqim my way
Your blessing is my goal

Types of Rhyme Based on the Appropriateness of Syllable Sounds

Based on the suitability of the syllable sounds, poetry is divided into 6 (six), namely:
