Etymologically, the word "prologue" comes from the Greek word "prologos". Pro which means before and Logos which means word. So that the meaning of the prologue is an introductory word intended to introduce the contents of a work.
In general, the prologue is an important part of a literary work in the form of an opening sentence or an introduction. In general, the contents of the prologue explain the characters and actors, the conflicts that occur, as well as a synopsis of the play from a literary work.
Another meaning of prologue is an introduction to the script which can be in the form of dialogue or a flashback of an event that occurs in the story. Basically the prologue is not mandatory, it's just that with a prologue it will make the reader or listener even more curious and also interested in the contents of the story.
Prologue function
Referring to the definition of prologue above, there are several main functions of the prologue. Some of the prolog functions are as follows:
- As an opening word or introduction to a literary work.
- To introduce the characters and cast, conflict, and play a synopsis of a story.
- To attract the attention of readers and make them more curious about the contents of the story.
Prologue Types
There are several types of prologue depending on the basis used. In the division of the types of prologue, generally using three bases, namely: first, based on the presentation of the play, second, based on means, and third, based on the existence of the manuscript.

Based on the Presentation of the Play
It is divided into 8 types, which include:
- Opera is a prologue whose dialogue is sung to the accompaniment of music.
- Tragedy is a prologue filled with sorrow
- Comedy is a heart-stirring prologue filled with humor.
- rage comedy is a blend of tragedy and comedy.
- Farce is a prologue that looks like a farce, but isn't completely farce.
- Tableau is a type of Prologue that prioritizes movement, the players don't say dialogue, but only make movements.
- Melodrama is a prologue whose dialogue is spoken accompanied by melody/music.
- Sendratari is a combination of prologue and dance.
Based on Staging Facilities
Divided into 6, namely as follows:
- The Stage Drama is the prologue played by the actors on the stage.
- Television drama is a type of prologue that is almost the same as stage prologue, which distinguishes it from stage prologue, television drama cannot be touched.
- Drama Film is a film prologue whose staging uses a wide screen and is usually shown in theaters.
- Wayang drama is a prologue accompanied by wayang performances.
- Radio drama is prologue. Prologue cannot be seen or touched, this prologue can only be heard.
- Puppet Drama is a prologue in which the Prologue characters are depicted with puppets played by several people.
Based on the script
There are two types of prologue, namely:
- Traditional drama is a drama that does not use a script.
- Modern Drama is a drama that uses a script.

Here's how to make a good prologue:
- Take part of the most interesting conflict in the story to make the reader more curious.
- Include things that interest the reader.

- If the story is about love, then the prologue is made with a love conflict.
- Make the prologue short and straightforward, or about 400-500 words long.
- Prologue should not be related at all to chapter 1 in the story.
