Understanding Hydrology and the Hydrological Cycle (Complete) – The existence of water on Earth is relatively constant, because water is always circulating. This circulation of water is called hydrology. Sometimes in one place water is available in large quantities, even excessively, causing a disaster.

Sometimes in other places water is available in very small quantities, causing water shortage problems. There was even a time when there was no water at all in one place, causing a drought.
Floods, lack of water and drought are natural symptoms that will definitely be disturbing to the continuity and smoothness of human activities, even causing loss of property and fatalities.
This shows how important water is for life. Where is water found on Earth? how is it distributed? What causes flooding? What causes flooding and what is its impact? Here it will be explained in full.
Inland Waters
Hydrosphere comes from the words which mean water and which means layer or place. So the hydrosphere means the layer or seat of water on earth. Water in nature is divided into three types, namely water on the surface of the earth, water in the air (earth's atmosphere), and water inside the earth (soil).
The global composition of water is 97.2% in the ocean and 2.8% in the land and air. There are several branches of science that specifically study water, namely:
- Oceanography, is a science that studies the sea and sea water.
- Glaciology, is a science that studies ice and glacier.
- Hydrology, is the science that studies water.
Hydrologic Cycle
Hydrological cycle is the never-ending circulation of water from the atmosphere to the earth and back to the atmosphere through condensation, precipitation, evaporation and transpiration. Heating ocean water by sunlight is the key to the hydrological cycle process being able to run continuously. Water evaporates, then falls as precipitation in the form of rain, snow, sleet and sleet, drizzle or fog.
There are 3 types of water cycle as follows:
Short cycle
Occurs due to heating by sunlight, the water in the sea/ocean evaporates, rising into the air. In the air, water vapor experiences a decrease in temperature due to the difference in height (every time you rise 100 meters the air temperature decreases by 0.50). Thus, the higher you go up, the lower the air temperature, resulting in a condensation process (condensation).
Medium cycle
The medium cycle begins with sea water evaporating, then being carried by the wind towards land and through a condensation process turning into clouds. Then it falls as rain on land and seeps into the ground. Then return to the sea through rivers or water channels.
Long cycle
Sea water evaporates and rises into clouds through a condensation process, then is carried by the wind to higher places on land and snow or ice falls on the high mountains. Blocks of ice settle at the top of mountains and because of their gravity slide to lower places, melt to form glaciers and then flow through rivers back to the sea.
