According to Asidi Dipodjojo in his book Oral Communication (1982:59), Debate is a process of oral communication expressed in language to defend an opinion. Each party arguing will state an argument, giving reasons in a certain way the opposing party arguing or the other party listening to the debate becomes convinced and takes sides to him.
Purpose of Debate
Debate has several goals, namely achieving victory over arguments in order to support something that will be enforced or implemented. The purpose of a debate is also to present the truth about something that is being discussed, to bring up the pros and cons, and so on. The objectives to be achieved by the debate depend on the participants and members invited, the motion or case, time and place. So in general the objectives of the debate include:
- Mental training or courage to express opinions in public.
- Practice breaking down the opinions of your debating opponents
- Train to be critical of all debated material.
- Strengthen understanding of concepts from debate material.
- Debate can also improve the ability to respond to problems quickly through behavior and thinking methods critical of a topic, as well as providing an explanation of the most important concept or theory related to it module.
Debate Position
Debate has a very significant position in deciding legislation by the legislature, in the legal field, for example in the legal assembly suspects, in the fields of learning, political activities such as determining candidates or internal political policies, the business sector, as well economy.
In democratic countries such as America and Indonesia, debate is needed in determining laws or amending laws. Issues raised in the amendment review will be debated to find which arguments or ideas are closest to correct and most fair. Debate also functions in the progress of industrial business, especially when determining visionary steps to advance the industry.
Debate Ethics
A person who joins a debate team, whether pro, con or neutral, is obliged to uphold ethics or norms in asking questions and debating. The etiquette of asking questions in a debate is to be serious about seeking information, not testing the speaker, direct the question to the focus of the case, make a proposal special questions, avoiding wrong thinking methods, not involving emotional bias when asking, and displaying behavior normal.
On the other hand, debating ethics is having good knowledge, consideration in communicating reasons or persuasion, skills in ascertaining mistakes and loopholes, understanding the principles principles in conveying persuasion and using arguments to weaken the opponent's statements, delivering speeches and arguments in a planned, easy and solid manner, and appreciating reality.
Not only does it have ethics, benefits and objectives, debate also has elements of debate, debate identity, structure, various types of debate, and debate methods. Some of these things generally vary depending on the country where the debate is held and the activities being held. Types of Debate
Debate has various types or types which are grouped based on purpose, form or procedure. The following are various types of debates that we often encounter:
Re-examination debate or cross-examination debating
Re-examination debates are carried out to identify the correctness of checks that have been tried previously. In this debate, several issues were raised regarding mutual bonds that give rise to people who are being given a problem can support the position that the party giving it wants to uphold or strengthen problem.
Parliamentary Debate or Assembly or Parliamentary Debating
Parliamentary debates are also known as Assembly debates. The function of this parliamentary debate is to share or increase support for a particular law. In a parliamentary debate, all members of the debate have the right to submit comments and ideas whether they support it or oppose a proposal that has been informed after being permitted by the debate panel accompanied by an alibi sturdy.
Formal Debate
Official debate or conventional debate or learning debate. This official debate aims to provide an opportunity for each speaker team to deliver the audience or participants debate about several reasons or ideas that can be supported or rejected proposal. The reasons given must include ideas, be clear, and relate to shared needs.
Procedures for Conducting a Debate
What are the procedures for conducting a good and correct debate? The following are the procedures:
- Master and implement the debate rules that have been agreed upon by the participants and debate members. If a member of the debate breaks the rules it will affect the team.
- The questions raised should be informed reliably, not insulting, testing, or... demeaning your opponent, the problem is also not to attack the opponent individually but focus on the case being discussed.
- Propose reasons with critical analysis, come up with ideas, and be coherent. These three things will be better if done with good rhetorical skills.
- In conveying ideas, identify and understand your opponent's weaknesses or strengths. This is very important for developing a debate strategy so that it is efficient in refuting and influencing opposing debate participants.
- The reasons given do not require very much because time is limited. Organize the reasons into short, straightforward points that refer directly to the case to be debated.
- Mastering well the mistakes in thinking are most important in solving problems. This also plays a role in identifying the weaknesses of the arguments given by the opponent.
- Present ideas that are accurate and can be accounted for. Also include valid data that can support reasons or ideas.
- Make a conclusion that presents a final statement with direct sentences that directly address your opponent's gap point. Presenting a conclusion does not need to be very long with points that emphasize the argument and must be conveyed firmly to show confidence that the argument is correct.
