BMKG: Definition, History, Position and Activities
The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), previously known as the Meteorology and Geophysics Agency (BMG), is Indonesian non-departmental government agency that carries out government duties in the fields of meteorology, climatology and geophysics.
History of BMKG
The history of meteorological and geophysical observations in Indonesia began in 1841, starting with observations made individually by Dr. Onnen, Head of Hospital in Bogor. Along with the development of technology, activities are increasingly being treated with data from weather and geophysical observations.
This individual observation activity was inaugurated by the Dutch East Indies Government in 1866. Became a government agency with the name Magnetisch en Meteorologisch Observatorium (Magnetic and Meteorological Observatory) led by Dr. Bergsma.
In the history of its development, BMKG underwent several name changes. In 1942-1945 the name of the meteorology and geophysics agency was changed to Kisho Kauso Kusho (during the Japanese occupation).
After independence, this agency was split into two, namely the Meteorological Bureau which was located within the Supreme Headquarters of the Indonesian People's Army. Both Meteorology and Geophysics Departments, under the Ministry of Public Works and Energy. Until finally in 1950 Indonesia officially became a member of the World Meteorological Organization.
The Meteorology and Geophysics Department was renamed the Meteorology and Geophysics Institute in 1955. This agency is under the Ministry of Defense. but in 1960 the name was returned to the Meteorology and Geophysics Agency which is under the Department of Civil Aviation.
In 1965, the name was changed to the Directorate of Meteorology and Geophysics and in 1972 to the Center for Meteorology and Geophysics which is under the Department of Transportation. In 1980 it was changed again to the Meteorology and Geophysics Agency.
Through Presidential Regulation Number 61 of 2008, the Meteorology and Geophysics Agency changed its name to the Agency Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics (BMKG) with permanent status as a Non-Departmental Government Institution.
Duties and Position of BMKG
The organization of the Center for Meteorology and Geophysics Region II was determined by the decision of the Meteorology and Geophysics Agency Ship Number: KEP 005 of 2004 dated 5 October 2004.
The position of the Center for Meteorology and Geophysics Region II is the Technical Implementation Unit within the Meteorological Agency and Geophysics which is under the auspices of and directly responsible to the head of the Meteorology and Meteorology Agency Geophysics.
The Center for Meteorology and Geophysics Region II has the task of carrying out observations, collecting and disseminating data, processing analysis and forecasts as well as research and cooperation, calibration and services for meteorology, climatology, air quality and geophysics.
In carrying out its daily duties, the Center for Meteorology and Geophysics Region II administratively supervised by the Main Secretariat, which is technically operational, supervised by deputies in accordance with their field of duties each.
Organizational Structure of the Center for Meteorology and Geophysics
The organizational structure of the Center for Meteorology and Geophysics Region II Ciputat consists of several divisions, namely:
- Administration Section
- Observation Field
- Data and Information Field
- Functional Position Group.
On a daily basis, the Center for Meteorology and Geophysics Region II which covers 11 provinces is also the station coordinator in Banten Province.
BMKG General Activities
The following are the general activities of the Regional II Center for Meteorology and Geophysics in carrying out its duties, including:
- Coordination of observations, collection and dissemination of data, processing, analysis and forecasting as well as research and cooperation in the BMKG sector.
- Preparation of plans and program activities for the Great Hall.
- Implementation of research and collaboration, as well as observations in the BMKG sector.
- Collection, processing, analysis and regional forecasting, as well as dissemination of data and information in the BMKG field. Installation, maintenance, calibration and repair of BMKG equipment and communication stations in the area.
- Evaluation and preparation of reports on Hall activities.
- Implementation of administrative matters and home response from the Hall.
- The implementation of these general duties and activities is implemented through the provision of services to support safety aviation and shipping, natural disaster management, air pollution control, agricultural development and procurement food.
Services to the Community
Monitoring and understanding the BMKG phenomenon, namely carrying out operational observations and data collection regularly, completely and accurately. So it is used to recognize and understand the characteristics of BMKG elements in order to make accurate forecasts and information to the public.
Providing BMKG data, information and services to the public according to their needs and desires with a high level of accuracy and on time.
Coordinate and facilitate activities in accordance with BMKG authority. So BMKG is obliged to supervise operational implementation, provide technical guidance, and has the authority to calibrate BMKG equipment in accordance with applicable regulations.
Actively participate in international activities, namely BMKG in carrying out operational activities. By always referring to international regulations, remembering that the BMKG phenomenon is not limited and is not related to the territorial boundaries of any country.
