Understanding Quality Management
ISO, which is an international standardization body, states the definition of quality, namely the ability of goods or services to provide satisfaction to customers (consumers).
Quality Management is the act of supervising all activities and tasks required to maintain the desired level of excellence. This includes establishing a quality policy, creating and planning quality and quality assurance and control and quality improvement.
Quality that is monitored is not only limited to product quality but also to the quality of the company as a whole. Starting from the quality of the employees who work, to the quality of the company in the eyes of consumers.
Quality here is an assessment of the quality produced whether it meets company standards or is still below. So there needs to be a management that handles this part. Apart from that, there is also quality in humans, in processes and also in environmental quality.
Quality management is used to instill quality awareness in all processes within an organization. Which is carried out with a management approach for an organization that is focused on quality, with the participation of all its members to achieve long-term success by looking at customer satisfaction and also providing benefits for all members organization.
Quality Management Approach
There are several approaches that can be taken before implementing this quality management. According to Davis, quality is not only an emphasis on final aspects, namely products and services, but is also related to human quality, process quality and environmental quality.
Transcendental Approach
This quality approach is something that can be felt, but is difficult to interpret, operationalize or measure.
Product-based Approach
The quality of this approach is a characteristic or attribute that can be measured. Differences in quality indicate objective differences in the attributes of the product, but this approach cannot explain differences in individual tastes and preferences.
User-Based Approach
This quality approach is based on the idea that quality depends on the person who sees it and the product really satisfies a person's preferences or suits the taste of fitness for use is a high quality product.
Manufacturing-Based Approach
The quality of this approach is that it is supply-based or comes from the producer's perspective defines quality as something that is in accordance with the requirements of "conformance quality" and procedure.
This approach focuses on conformity to specifications determined by the company internally. Therefore, what determines quality is the standards determined by the company and not the consumers who use it.
Value-Based Approach
The quality of this approach is to look at quality in terms of value and price, quality is defined as affordable price. Therefore, quality in this view is relative, so that a product that has the highest quality does not necessarily mean a product that is very valuable. The most valuable product is the most appropriate product to buy.
Quality Management Criteria
Quality management is said to be successful if someone who manages it meets several criteria. This opinion was expressed by Garvin. The criteria according to Garvin are as follows:
- Performance (performance) is the main characteristic of this product
- Features are complementary or additional characteristics
- Reliability is the probability of failure in use
- Conformance is the extent to which the design and operation characteristics of a product meet predetermined standards
- Durability is measuring how long a product's technical or economic life is
- Serveablity (service) is easy to improve, which includes speed, competence, comfort, facilities, maintenance and satisfactory complaint handling.
- Asthetics (aesthetics) is related to the pattern, feel and attractiveness of the product
- Perceived Quality is related to the image or reputation of the product and also the company's responsibility for the product.
