Understanding Active Debate
Debate is an argumentative activity between two or more parties, both individuals and groups, in conducting discussions and deciding problems and differences. Hendri Guntur Tarigan stated that debate is mutual argumentation between individuals or between groups of people with the aim of achieving victory for one party.
Another definition of active debate is a form of theory or argument, either verbally or in writing, between two people or groups with different opinions, by mutually attack or give influence so that they want to carry out, act, follow or at least have a tendency in accordance with what is desired by the speaker or writer. The debate method has the advantage of being able to generate mental courage in speaking and taking responsibility for the knowledge mastered.
Purpose of Active Debate
The purpose of active debate is to train someone or sitting participants to look for strong arguments within solve a controversial problem and also have a democratic attitude and mutual respect for differences opinion.
And also, the aim of implementing the active debate method in class is to train students to think critically, train students to express opinions well and right, training students to be able to understand the train of thought of other people who are opposite to them, and also training students to grow new ideas or ideas from the results the study.
Benefits of Active Debate
Hall (2011:5) states the benefits of active debate, namely:
- As a stimulant of critical thinking skills through various methods
- As a stimulus to controversial topics
- Listen and find out the positive and negative sides of an issue
- Learn to think systematically and analytically
- To communicate thoughts to other people.
Elements of Active Debate
Arifin (2007:45), stated that there were several elements of active debate, including the following:
Theme
A theme is a problem or problem that will be reviewed and developed in the debate. The theme of this debate should be determined and published before the debate is held.
Moderators
The moderator is the person who starts the debate. As a debate leader, the moderator acts as a guide, mediator or similar as a discussion referee in the debate.
Participant
Participants are people who take a role and are directly involved in contributing ideas to the debate. Debate participants can be composed of opposing individuals or groups, namely those who support and those who deny.
Listener
Listeners must be able to develop themselves to become good listeners. Often listeners will be asked to explain their opinions on the results of the debate.
Time
The organizing party must make a plan for allocating debate time according to needs. Participants must be given sufficient opportunity to explain their proposals clearly. The time allocation should be explained to the debate participants before the debate begins.
Steps to Active Debate
Silberman (2014:141) states that there are active debate steps, including the following:
- Draft statements containing opinions about controversial issues related to the subject
- Group students into pro and con groups with equal numbers
- Create two to four subgroups within each pro and con group. Each subgroup is composed of students who have very good to poor achievements. In other words, subgroups are made heterogeneous.
- Active discussion begins by asking representatives of each subgroup to provide opening arguments
- Ask each subgroup to provide a counter argument to the opposing group's argument.
- Counter-arguments are presented in turns according to the teacher's guidelines. Students are asked to give applause to each subgroup that has presented a counter argument.
If it is enough, then active debate activities can be stopped. Students are asked to sit in a circle and sit next to students from the opposite side of the debate.
Students and teachers re-discuss the issues being debated and also ask students to find out the best arguments put forward by both parties.
