Addition of Numbers
On the number line:
- The further to the right, the larger the number value
- The further to the left, the smaller the number value.
– a + (-b) = – (a + b)
– a + b = – (a – b)
– a + b = b – a
Example 1:
– a + (-b) = – (a + b)
– 7 + (-10) = – (7 + 10) = – 17
Example 2:
– a + b = – (a – b)
– 8 + 7 = – (8 – 7) = – 1

– a + b = b – a
– 3 + 2 = 2 – 3 = – 1
Subtraction
The formula for subtracting numbers from integers is:
a – b = a + (-b)
a – (-b) = a + b
Example 1:
a – b = a + (-b)
7 – 1 = 7 + (-1) = 6
Example 2:
a – (-b) = a + b
8 – (-2) = 8 + 2 = 10
Multiplication
If p and q are integers then: p x q = pq
p x (-q) = – (p x q) = – pq
(-p) x q = – (p x q) = – pq
(-p) x (-q) = p x q = pq
Example 1:
p x (-q) = – (p x q) = – pq
3 x (-2) = – (3 x 2) = -6
Example 2:
(-p) x q = – (p x q) = – pq
