Definition of Metabolism, Processes and Types (Complete) – Living things are creatures that need certain substances to be able to move and carry out certain activities or processes in their bodies. This activity requires food as a provider of these substances.
In food there are various substances that are needed by the body to be able to continue living. after food enters the body, the substances in it are then separated according to their respective uses.
Definition of Metabolism, Processes and Types (Complete)
In this process, it undergoes metabolic processes. Metabolism is very important for the body because it can provide great benefits for its life. An explanation of metabolism can be explained below:
Definition of Metabolism
The definition of metabolism is a chemical process that occurs in the body of living things. the process is in the form of preparation or decomposition in a certain substance so that it can be easily absorbed by the body. The word metabolism comes from "metabole" which means change. The change in question is to process certain substances in a chemical process in order to survive.
Metabolism Type
There are 2 types of metabolism, namely:
- Catabolism Catabolism is the process of breaking down substances into small particles which can later be converted into energy.
- Anabolism – Anabolism is a process in the preparation of organic compounds derived from certain molecules so that they can be easily absorbed by the body.
Metabolic Process
The processes that are owned by metabolism are divided into 3, namely:
Carbohydrate metabolism
Carbohydrate metabolism includes the processes of synthesis (anabolism), decomposition (catabolism), and changes in the form of carbohydrates in an organism. The most important carbohydrates are in the form of glucose.
Glucose is a simple sugar compound or monosaccharide. The process of digesting carbohydrates undergoes hydrolysis process, which is a decomposition process that uses water as a medium.
When food enters the mouth, the food will be mixed with saliva which contains ptyalin enzymes. The enzyme further hydrolyzes starch into small maltose and glucose. After the food is swallowed, it is then secreted in the stomach.
After that, the food enters the duodenum and mixes with pancreatic juice. The results of this process are glucose, fructose, mannose and monosaccharides which are then carried to the liver by the blood.
Fat Metabolism
Fat metabolism is the process by which fatty acids are digested, broken down and used to produce energy or can be stored in the human body as energy reserves.
After food enters the intestine, contractions begin to occur which stimulate the release of the hormone choleistokinin. This hormone can cause the gallbladder to contract and can secrete bile.
Bile contains bile salts which are useful for being able to play an important role in emulsifying fat to become even smaller fat granules. And this facilitates the process of fat hydrolysis by the cockroach that has been produced by the pancreas. In the absorption of fat metabolism, most of it occurs in the small intestine.
Protein Metabolism
Protein metabolism is a physical and chemical process that includes the formation of amino acids turn into protein or anabolism and also the breakdown of protein into amino acids or catabolism.
Amino acids enter the body's tissues through the blood to be synthesized back into protein. The balance that occurs between protein synthesis and carbolism is to maintain normal cell function.
The early stages of amino acid metabolism release the amino group which then changes to the carbon skeleton in the amino acid molecule. The process of releasing amino acids includes transmission and oxidative deamination.
What is meant by transmission is the catabolic process of amino acids in which the amino groups are involved. Meanwhile, oxidative deamination uses dehydrogenase as a catalyst.
Amino acids cannot be stored in the body. If the body experiences a shortage of other energy sources, it will use amino acids as a replacement.
