Geographical Location of Indonesia: Definition, Impact, Supporting Factors, Strengths and Weaknesses

Geographical location is the position of determining the position of an area with other areas seen from the place in which part of the earth the area is located or is located.

Geographically, Indonesia is located between the continents of Australia and Asia, and between the Indian and Pacific oceans. Meanwhile, astronomically, Indonesia is located at 6°N (North Latitude) – 11°S (South Latitude) and 95°East (East Longitude)-141°East (East Longitude).

The Impact of Indonesia's Geographic Location

Indonesia has three main climates, namely a hot (tropical) climate, a monsoon climate (season), and a marine climate.

The monsoon climate occurs due to the influence of monsoon winds that blow changing directions every half year. The wind that blows comes from the northeast and is dry so that it will cause the dry season to occur from April to October. Meanwhile, the wind blows from the southwest and is wet so that it will cause the rainy season to occur from October to April.

The marine climate occurs because of Indonesia's position which is surrounded by seas and oceans. So this climate causes more rainy seasons. While the hot or tropical climate will cause the average air in Indonesia to be hot. This happens because Indonesia is a country located around the equator.

Indonesia's geographical location also causes Indonesia to have two seasons. This is influenced by the monsoons that blow every six months. Besides that, Indonesia's location at the crossroads of world traffic makes Indonesia very busy and profitable from an economic standpoint.

The geographical location of Indonesia is also bordered by other countries as follows:

To the north, Indonesia is bordered by Malaysia, Singapore and the Philippines
To the south, Indonesia is bordered by Australia
To the west, Indonesia is bordered by the Indian Ocean
To the east, Indonesia is bordered by Papua New Guinea

Supporting Factors Geographical Location of Indonesia

The geographical location of Indonesia mentioned above is influenced by several factors. The following are the supporting factors:

Astronomy location

Astronomical location is the location of a country or region that can be observed through its astronomical longitude and latitude.

Based on the latitude of 6°N-11°S, Indonesia is located in a region with a tropical climate which has the following characteristics:

  • high rainfall
  • there is a vast tropical rain forest
  • sunshine all year round
  • and, high air humidity

In addition, Indonesia is on the longitude of 95°E-141°E. This position causes Indonesia to have three time zones. That is :

  • Western Indonesian Time (WIB)

Regions in western Indonesia have a time difference of +7 to GMT (Greenwich Mean Time). Its territories include Sumatra, Java, Madura, West Kalimantan, Central Kalimantan, and the surrounding small islands.

  • Central Indonesian Time (WITA)

The central Indonesian region has a time difference of +8 to GMT (Greenwich Mean Time). Its territories include, among others, Bali, Nusa Tengara, South Kalimantan, East Kalimantan, Sulawesi Island, and the surrounding small islands.

  • Eastern Indonesia Time (WIT)

Eastern Indonesia has a time difference of +9 to GMT (Greenwich Mean Time). Its territories include the Maluku Islands, Papua, West Papua, and the surrounding small islands.

In addition, the position of Indonesian Astronomers has the following influences:

  • don't have a troublesome winter
  • air temperature tends to warm to hot
  • quite high rainfall
  • there are many tropical rain forests.

Physiological Location

Physiological location is a position where the area can be observed according to its physical aspect. Namely longitude and latitude, location with other areas, types of rocks present, relief of the earth's surface and everything related to the sea.

Physiological location itself is a combination of geographic, astronomical, geological and marine zones. There are 3 large seas that surround Indonesia and become the boundaries of the sea zone. Where in the south Indonesia faces the Indian Ocean, in the north it faces the South China Sea. As well as in the east with the Pacific Ocean.

Geological Location

Indonesia has a geological position between 2 Circums, namely the Mediterranean Circum and the Pacific Circum. And it is located on the three main plates of the world, namely the Pacific, Australian and Eurasian plates. Geological location itself is the location of the area seen from the condition of the rocks on the earth's surface.

This position makes Indonesia frequently hit by earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. Even most of the mountains in Indonesia are active volcanoes.
