Travel Prayers: Series of Travel Prayers and Their Meanings
To protect ourselves and protect ourselves from anything that might happen on the way, we should not forget to recite the traveling prayer as ordered by the Prophet.
Narrated from Abdullah bin Sirjia Ra. said, "When the Prophet Muhammad traveled, he recited prayers."
اللَّهُمَّ أَنْتَ الصَّاحِبُ فِى السَّفَرِ وَالْخَلِيفَةُ فِى الأَهْلِ اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّى أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ وَعْثَاءِ السَّفَرِ وَكَآبَةِ الْمَنْظَرِ وَسُوءِ الْمُنْقَلَبِ فِى الْمَالِ وَالأَهْلِ
“Allahumma antash shoohibu fis safar, wal kholiifatu fil expert. Allahumma inni a'udzubika min wa'tsaa-is safari wa ka-aabatil manzhori wa suu-il munqolabi fil maali wal expert."
It means
“O Allah, you are a companion on a journey and a surrogate in the family. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the hardships of the journey, the sorrow of returning, the prayers of those who are persecuted, and from the sad sight of family and wealth." (HR. Tirmdzi and Ibn Majah with authentic sanad).
People who want to travel can add a prayer to go on a trip as the Prophet Muhammad also taught.
زَوَّدَكَ اللهُ التَّقْوَى، وَغَفَرَ ذَنْبَكَ، وَيَسَّرَ لَكَ الْخَيْرَ حَيْثُ مَا كُنْتَ
It means:
"May Allah grant you piety, forgive your sins and make good easy for you wherever you are."
Then, when preparing to go on a journey or traveling, it is recommended to say a greeting prayer to those left behind, as explained in the hadith of the Prophet Muhammad.
Rasulullah said:
"If one of you wants to travel, let him greet his brothers, because their prayers will add goodness to him along with his prayers." (HR. Tabrani).

The series of travel prayers consists of several prayers, here is a series of prayers that can be read while traveling:
Far Traveling Prayer
If you are going to travel long distances with long and tiring distances, read the following prayer:
اَللّٰهُمَّ هَوِّنْ عَلَيْنَا سَفَرَنَا هَذَا وَاطْوِعَنَّابُعْدَهُ اَللّٰهُمَّ اَنْتَ الصَّاحِبُ فِى السَّفَرِوَالْخَلِيْفَةُفِى الْاَهْلِ
"O Allah, make it easy for us (in) this trip and bring the distance closer, O (my Lord) Allah, who accompanies us on the journey and You also protect (my) family."
Prayer Out of the House
Before leaving shortly after leaving the house, it would be nice if you read a prayer outside the house.
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ ، تَوَكَّلْتُ عَلَى اللَّهِ ، وَلا حَوْلَ وَلا قُوَّةَ إِلاَّ بِاللَّه
"Bismillaahi Tawakkaltu 'alallahi wa laa hawla wa laa quwwata illaa billaah."
By saying the name of Allah I surrender myself to Allah and there is no power and strength except (belonging to) Allah.
Prayer Before Riding Land Vehicles
When boarding a vehicle and before the vehicle moves it would be nice to read the following prayer:
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ مَجْرَاهَا ومُرْسَاهَا، إنَّ ربّي لَغَفُورٌ رَحِيمٌ وَمَا قََدَرُوا اللَّهَ حَقَّ قَدْرِهِ وَالْأَرْضُ جَمِيعًا قَبْضَتُهُ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ وَالسَّماوَاتُ مَطْوِيَّاتٌ بِيَمِينِهِ سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى عَمَّا يُشْرِكُونَ
“In the name of Allah when departing and anchoring, verily my Lord is Most Forgiving, Most Merciful. And they did not magnify Allah with the glory that they should. Even though the earth is entirely in His hand on the Day of Judgment and the heavens will be rolled up by His power. Glory be to Allah and Most High from those they associate.
Prayer Before Boarding a Sea Vehicle
بِسْمِ اللهِ مَجْرَهَا وَمُرْسَهَآاِنَّ رَبِّىْ لَغَفُوْرٌرَّحِيْمٌ
Bismillaahi majrahaa wa mursaahaa inna robbii laghofuurur rohiim
It means :
"In the name of Allah who runs this vehicle sailing and anchoring, verily my Lord is truly Forgiving, Most Merciful"
Prayer When Using or Inside the Vehicle
When traveling long distances, of course we need a means of transportation so we can arrive more quickly. The following is a prayer when traveling by vehicle:
اَللَّهُ اَكْبَرُ اَللَّهُ اَكْبَرُ اَللَّهُ اَكْبَرُ سُبْحَانَ الَّذِى سَخَّرَ لَنَا هَذَا وَمَا كُنَّا لَهُ مُقْرِنِينَ وَإِنَّا إِلَى رَبِّنَا لَمُنْقَلِبُونَ اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّا نَسْأَلُكَ فِى سَفَرِنَا هَذَا الْبِرَّ وَالتَّقْوَى وَمِنَ الْعَمَلِ مَا تَرْضَى اللَّهُمَّ هَوِّنْ عَلَيْنَا سَفَرَنَا هَذَا وَاطْوِ عَنَّا بُعْدَهُ اللَّهُمَّ أَنْتَ الصَّاحِبُ فِى السَّفَرِ وَالْخَلِيفَةُ فِى الأَهْلِ اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّى أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ وَعْثَاءِ السَّفَرِ وَكَآبَةِ الْمَنْظَرِ وَسُوءِ الْمُنْقَلَبِ فِى الْمَالِ وَالأَهْلِ
“God is Great, God is Great, God is Great. Glory be to the One who has subjected all of this to us even though we were previously unable to master it and verily we will return to our Lord. O Allah... indeed we ask You for goodness, piety and good deeds that You are pleased with on our journey. O Allah, make things easy for us on this journey, shorten the distance from the distance we travel and make a substitute for the family we left behind. O Allah, you are a companion on the way and a representative in the family. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from hardships in traveling, sad and ugly sights return both to our wealth and our families." (HR. Muslim).
Prayer When Stopping Somewhere (Transit)
أَعُوذُ بِكَلِمَاتِ اللَّهِ التَّامَّاتِ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا خَلَقَ
"a'uudzubikalimaatillahit tammaati min syarri maa kholaq"
I seek refuge in Allah's perfect words from the evil of His creatures.
Prayer When Reaching The Goal
After arriving at the destination should read the following prayer:
اللَّهُمَّ إنِّيْ أَسْألُكَ خَيْرَهَا وَخَيْرَ أهْلِهَا وَخَيْرَ مَا فِيهَا، وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّهاَ وَشَرِّ أَهْلِهَا وَشَرّ مَا فِيهَا
O Allah, I ask You for the good of this land and the good of its people and the good that is in it, and I seek refuge in You from the evil of this land and the evil of its people.
That is a series of travel prayers that can be read for safety during the journey to the destination. The prayers above are taken from prayers for the pilgrimage, but are also commonly used as daily travel prayers.
In addition to praying, people who want to go on a safar or journey are advised to say goodbye to the family, relatives and neighbors they will leave behind. Then ask for prayers from them and pray for them.
Rasulullah said:
“If one of you wants to travel, let him say goodbye to his brothers. Verily, Allah causes in their prayers a good thing." (HR. Thabrani).
As for the words or utterances used to say goodbye, then we should follow the teachings of the Prophet. Because in it there is the meaning of prayer and the reward of following his sunnah.
It was narrated from Abu Huraurah Ra, that the Prophet Muhammad said:
"Whoever wants to travel, let him say to the person left behind:
أَسْتَوْدِعُكَ اللَّهَ الَّذِي لَا تَضِيعُ وَدَائِعُهُ
“Astaudi'ukumllaha alladzi la tadhi'u wadai'ahu”
It means:
"I entrust you to Allah, the One who does not waste the deposit." (Narrated by Ibn Sunni).
The words above convey the meaning that I am entrusting you to Allah, the One who, if entrusted with something, will protect and care for it properly.
As stated in another hadith:
"Indeed, Allah if entrusted with something, surely He will take care of it." (HR. Ahmad).
And, for those who are said goodbye, he should also say a prayer.
Prayer Readings For Those Who Have Condolences
أستودع الله دينك وأمانتك وخواتيم عملك
"Astaudi'ullaha dinaka wa amanataka wa khawatima 'amalika"
It means:
"I entrust to Allah for your religion, your trust, and the end of your deeds." (HR. Ahmad, Tirmidhi, Nasa'I, Abu Dawud).
