Definition of the Large Intestine, Structure, Function and Parts (Complete) - This time aroundknowledge.co.id Again, we will discuss the organs of the human body, namely the large intestine. The large intestine is one of the important organs for the digestion of our body. Playing a very important role in the digestive process of our body, we must take good care of the large intestine.

Definition of the Large Intestine, Structure, Function and Parts (Complete)

Speaking of the large intestine, are you sure you already know what the large intestine is? how important is its role in the digestion of our body? For more details, let's review here in full.

Definition of the Large Intestine

The large intestine is a digestive organ which is a continuation of the small intestine. Colon is another name for the large intestine. The main function of the large intestine is to absorb food that cannot be absorbed in the large intestine, also absorb water and salt so that it can regulate fluid balance in the body. Through the absorption of water, the large intestine also plays a role in forming the consistency of feces (liquid or solid). The large intestine is about 6 cm in diameter and 1.5 meters long. The rest of the food that passes through the large intestine will end up in the rectum which is the estuary of the large intestine (anus).

Colon Structure

In general, the large intestine has a wall structure similar to that of the small intestine and most other digestive organs. The structure of the large intestine is composed by the following 4 walls (From outside to inside):

1. Serous Layer

It is the outermost layer which consists of blood vessels, lymph and nerves. The serosa of the large intestine is composed of connective tissue covered by visceral peritoneum. The serous layer has small cavities where the serous fluid exits which functions as a lubricant for muscle movement.

2. Muscle Layer

The muscle layer in the large intestine is a layer of smooth muscle that works without us knowing it. There are 2 types of muscle fibers, namely longitudinal (elongated) and circular (circular) muscle fibers. The combination of the contractions of these two types of muscles will produce intestinal peristalsis which functions to break down food and carry it to the next digestive organs.

3. Submucosa Layer

It is a layer of loose connective tissue that contains blood vessels, lymphatics, nerves and mucous glands. Blood vessels in the submucosal lining of the large intestine play an important role in circulating absorbed food.

4. Mucosa Layer

The mucous layer is composed of simple epithelial cells and thin connective tissue. The mucous layer has goblet cells which can produce mucus. This mucus is the secretion of all the glands found in the large intestine. The layer whose production is influenced by the hormones secretin and enterokirin is often also called intestinal juice.

Colon Function

There are several functions of the large intestine in our body's digestive process, here are the reviews:

  • Absorb fluids and salt from food that has passed through the large intestine.
  • To maintain fluid and electrolyte balance through the absorption of water in the digestive tract.
  • As a place where vitamin K is produced which functions as a component of blood clotting.
  • Protects the digestive tract from bacterial infections with its mucus.
  • Balances the pH of the food by producing an alkaline solution and there are bacteria that produce fat so that the acidity of the food can be neutralized.
  • A place for storing waste and excretion that is not needed by the body.

Large Intestine Section

Macroscopically the large intestine can be divided into 6 main sections, these six sections are difficult to distinguish histologically. The small intestine's supply of nutrients and oxygen comes from the superior mesenteric artery (top) and the inferior mesenteric artery (bottom). Here's the explanation:

1. Cecum (Caecum)

The cecum or caecum is the first part of the large intestine which is shaped like a pouch. It can be said that the cecum is the union of the last part of the small intestine (ileum) with the first part of the large intestine. The cecum is about 7 cm long. The main function of this pouch is to absorb nutrients that are not absorbed in the small intestine.

2. Ascending Colon

The ascending colon is a colon that is vertical and extends upward starting from the base of the stomach (right) to the liver. The ascending colon is the first part of the large intestine. The main function of the ascending colon is to absorb food that has not been absorbed in the small intestine.

3. Transverse Colon

The transverse colon is a continuation of the ascending colon with a horizontal shape. The transverse colon is attached to the stomach, the tissue whose job is to support this attachment is called omental tissue. The main function of the transverse colon is to complete the absorption of nutrients from food and help solidify feces.

4. Descending Colon

The descending colon is a continuation of the transverse colon which extends downward and ends at the sigmoid colon. The descending colon serves as a temporary stool storage and helps adjust the density of the stool.

5. Sigmoid colon

The sigmoid colon is a continuation of the descending colon, is short and is shaped like the letter S. The sigmoid colon is located on the lower left side of the abdomen. The sigmoid colon has strong muscle tissue so that it can carry out its function, which is to suppress feces so that they go to the rectum.

6. rectum

The rectum is the last part of the small intestine with a thick mucous lining structure and is rich in blood vessels. The main function of the rectum is a temporary storage area for faeces which will then be secreted out through the anus. The accumulation of feces will stimulate the nerves in the rectum to defecate (BAB).
