Definition of Hyponyms According to Experts, Meaning, Relationship, Types, Examples
In English it is called hyonymy. Derived from ancient Greek "hypo” means below and “onoma” which means name. So, hyponym literally means a name that is under another name (Pateda, 1986: 96).
Hyponyms, in semantics, are words or phrases that have the meaning of other, more general words or phrases known as hypernyms or hieronyms. Hyponyms themselves are included in the group of hyperonyms and hyponyms that have the same hyperonym are called cohyponyms.
Understanding Hyponyms According to Experts
The following is the definition of hyponyms according to experts, let's take a look.
1. Djajasudarma (1993: 48)
Hyponyms are meaning relationships that have a hierarchical meaning. Hyponymic relationships are close to synonyms. If a word has all the elements of another word, but not the opposite, then the relationship is said to be a hyponym.
2. Edi Subroto (1995: 25)
Hyponyms show the relationship between words that are vertical (top - bottom) or the relationship between classifications and members who are members of the group or their subordinates.
3. Sumarlam (2003: 45)
Hyponyms are language units of words, phrases and sentences whose meaning is assessed as part of the meaning of other language units.
4. Chaer (1994: 305)
Homonymy is a semantic relationship between a form of speech that has a meaning that is included in the meaning of another form of speech. The hyponym-hyperonym meaning relationship is different from the meronym-holonym meaning relationship which is a relationship between part and unity.
5. Palmer (1983: 78)
Hyponyms include a logical relation to the enthyment which means that if the hyponym has been said then You can imagine the name of the group and if the name of the group has been mentioned, then the hyponym is possible mentioned. For example, if the word "pigeon" is mentioned, then it can be seen that it is known as a pigeon including birds and if "birds" are mentioned, then this includes pigeons, parrots and other.
Meaning Relations of Hyponym Aspects
The meaning relationship of un can be seen from the aspect of hyponyms in addition to the aspects of antonyms, synonyms, homonyms, polysemes, overlapping meanings and ambiguity. Meaning relationship means the semantic relationship that exists between language units.
Language units can be in the form of verses and phrases. Through meaning relations, similarity of meaning, conflict of meaning, range of meaning, double meaning and excess of meaning can be expressed. This meaning relationship can be understood if "jasmine" is a hyponym of "flower" because jasmine is a type of flower. Jasmine is indeed a flower but not only jasmine, there are also sunflowers, shoes, roses, orchids, tuberose, cherry blossoms and others.

A similar hyponymic relationship is a multilevel relationship where the lexical item at the top has the most general meaning and can be used as a reference for the lexical items below it. Also called superordinate.
The lexical items below also have more specific meanings and contain elements of the meaning of the lexical items above them. These lexical items are called subordinates or hyponyms. The relationship between hyponyms is called cohyponymy.
Types of Hyponyms
- Pure Hyponyms, for example paddy, include two words in the same group as nasi and rice.
