Review of Niu Kqi3 Max, the Best Electric Scooter for Commuting

Riding an electric scooter is fun to a certain extent, but some are more fun than others. Niu Kqi3 Max is one of them. Fun, fast, long distance and very comfortable to drive.
Among the best electric scooters, the Kqi3 Max is not the lightest model. If you have a ladder to climb, look elsewhere. Add to that a cool design, grippy brakes, and an app that lets you customize the ride, and you have a great all-round electric scooter.

Price and Availability
Kqi3 was first released in 2022 and comes in three versions. The tested Kqi3 Max I costs IDR. 15 million, has a 450W motor, 40 mile range, and a top speed of 23.6 mph. The Pro version is sold for Rp. 12 million, has a 350W motor, a range of 31 miles, and a top speed of 20 miles per hour.
The Sport version is sold for Rp. 10 million and offers a 300W motor, 25 mile range, and a top speed of 17.4 MPH. The Pro model comes in black with gold trim, while the Sport model comes in black with four trim options: white, blue, red or black.
Niu Kqi3 Max Design
The Kqi3's headlights are large round LEDs. It looks like one of the best ring lights and definitely stands out among other electric scooters I've tested. The taillights are red LED bars behind the fenders in a more traditional style.
The Kqi3 Max has dual mechanical disc brakes, perhaps overkill, but they certainly look good. It is painted red and stops the scooter very quickly. There's also a rear electronic brake that can be used to recover some of the energy and put it back into the battery.
Niu says you'll get about 4% battery life back on the highest setting (adjustable in the Niu app). It's not a ton, but it's something.
The Kqi3 Max's deck measures 22.4 x 6.3 inches, giving us plenty of room to rest our feet. Like most e-scooters, the deck is covered in rubber material to provide good grip on your shoes.
At 46.3 pounds, the Kqi3 is quite heavy. The handlebar folds up very easily (there's a simple but effective locking system), but it needs to be sturdy enough to carry around.
You'll want something lighter for this. For example, the Unagi Model One weighs about 27 pounds and is much smaller, making it better for people who need to lift the scooter up. However, the Unagi's ride is not smooth due to its small rubber wheels.
Niu Kqi3 Max Performance
This scooter is really fun to ride. The 450W motor isn't much more powerful than other models I've tested, but the max output of 700W really gives the Kqi3 Max substantial pickup. It's most noticeable when starting out. Kqi3 reaches faster speeds than other models.
On my standard test climb (6% grade), the Kqi3 Max was able to maintain a speed of around 10 MPH, which is pretty good. Other scooters like the TurboAnt V8 with a 450W motor can do 6 MPH at best.
Then I drove the Kqi3 Max on an adjacent road. The gradient is much steeper (around 9% in one section) which is a headache for scooters and cyclists. Here the scooter slows to about 5-6 MPH but still stutters.
On flat terrain, the Kqi3 Max quickly accelerated to full speed and flew around our neighborhood with ease. There's no suspension, but the large 9.5-inch self-healing tires are more than soft.
Battery Life
Niu says the Kqi3's 46.8V 486.7Wh lithium battery is good for a range of up to 40 miles, similar to the 40+ mile range of the Segway Ninebot Kickscooter Max and TurboAnt V8. Also, like other scooters, the Max's actual range was much less in my testing.
After riding at full speed up and down enough hills, I was able to get about 20 miles on the Kqi3 Max before needing to recharge. To be fair, the expectations and reality of the Kqi3 Max aren't too different from other scooters I've tested.
If you're smaller or lighter than me, or plan to ride mostly flat roads, you'll notice better coverage.
Niu Kqi3 Max App
One of the smart features of the Niu app allows you to speed up your Kqi3 to the maximum. It only increases to about 23 MPH, but it feels like unlocking a cheat code.
Another feature of this app allows you to see the distance traveled by the scooter, speed average, and where you have traveled (if you started your riding session from application).
The app also allows you to lock and unlock your scooter remotely, which is a security measure and allows you to adjust the amount.
Conclusion
As someone who reviews a lot of electric scooters, I usually have several models sitting in my garage at once. It's a shame for my wife who wants to park her car there someday. When I recently opened the door and chose a scooter for my pleasure, it was the Niu Kqi3 Max.
It's fast, fun, and powerful enough to run up and down hills in the city. It looks good too. At a price of Rp. 15 million, the price is quite expensive, so you might want to look at the Niu Kqi3 Pro, which costs Rp. 3 million cheaper.
If you need to drag an electric scooter on a train or down stairs, the 26-pound Unagi Model One is still your best choice. But as the best all-around electric scooter, let alone the price. Nui Kqi3 is at the top of our list.
