AFNEI Tasks in Indonesia: Definition, History and Factors in the Formation of AFNEI

AFNEI is an allied force assigned to Indonesia after World War II ended. AFNEI's assignment to Indonesia aims to carry out post-war assignments by the allies who won World War II.

There are five main tasks of AFNEI in Indonesia, including the following:

  • Receiving the Handover of Power from the Hands of Japan

While in Indonesia, AFNEI was given the task of accepting the handover of power from the Japanese. All Japanese colonies in Indonesia must be handed over to the allied forces. AFNEI carries out this task by visiting various regions in Indonesia.

  • Freeing Allied Prisoners of War and Internees

AFNEI's next task in Indonesia is to release allied prisoners of war and internees. As is known, during Japan's rule in Indonesia, there were many troops from allied member countries detained by Japan in several places in Indonesia.

  • Collecting, Disarming, and Repatriating the Japanese

In Indonesia, AFNEI was also tasked with disarming and collecting Japanese people to be sent back to Japan. Japanese troops who had surrendered were transported from the regions of the Republic of Indonesia to the ports from which they were subsequently sent back to their country.

  • Upholding and Maintaining a State of Peace, Then Turning Over to Civil Administration

AFNEI's next task is to uphold and maintain a state of peace which will then be handed over to the civilian government. The civil government referred to here is the Dutch East Indies civil government (NICA) which from the start has been supporting AFNEI.

  • Gathering Information and Prosecuting War Criminals

AFNEI is also tasked with collecting all information related to war criminals and prosecuting those war criminals in allied courts. There were many Japanese military officers or high ranking officers who were punished by the allied courts.

AFNEI Formation Factors

AFNEI was formed due to several factors that emerged after the war, namely:

  • Shipping limitations.
  • Lack of supply logistics.
  • The addition of the Indo-China and Dutch East Indies territories to the South East Asia Command (SEAC) which added SEAC duties.
  • The large number of European prisoners of war and internees in Southeast Asia.
  • Long distances and bad weather with erratic monsoons.

AFNEI's assignment in Indonesia stems from the Potsdam agreement which requires allies to be responsible for areas in Indonesia that fall under the auspices of the South West Pacific Areas Command (SWPAC). To that end, Major Greenhalgh established headquarters in Jakarta on September 14, 1945.

Fifteen days later, September 29, 1945, the cruiser Cumberland anchored in the port of Tanjung Priok. AFNEI is in it.

AFNEI is a subordinate command of SEAC. AFNEI troops assigned to Indonesia are troops from a division led by Lieutenant General Sir Philip Christison.

Definition of AFNEI

AFNEI stands for Allied Forces Netherlands East Indies, are troops that came to Indonesia after the 2nd world war after Indonesia declared its independence. These troops arrived on September 29, 1945.

Historically, these AFNEI troops were allied troops sent to Indonesia after the end of World War II in order to disarm the Japanese army, liberate Japanese prisoners of war, and returning Indonesia back to the Dutch East Indies under Dutch rule and under the administration of NICA (Netherlands Indies Civil Administration). This troop is led by a leader named Lieutenant General Sir Philip Christison.

AFNEI Tasks in Indonesia: Definition, History and Factors in the Formation of AFNEI

History of AFNEI

After the problem with the Japanese army was resolved, the Indonesian people then faced the troops Allies from the Southeast Asia Command or the South East Asia Command (SEAC) under the command of Admiral Lord Louis Mountbatten.

The Allied troop officer who first came to Indonesia was Major Greenhalgh, he parachuted at Kemayoran airfield on September 14, 1945. Greenhalgh's task was to prepare the establishment of the Allies' headquarters in Jakarta.

Greenhalgh's arrival was followed by the anchoring of the cruiser Cumberland at Tanjung Priok on 29 September 1945. The ship was carrying the Commander of the Squadron leader of British Cruiser V, namely a Rear Admiral named W.R. Patterson.

The Allied Forces assigned to Indonesia were named the Allied Forces Netherlands East Indies (AFNEI) under the command of Lieutenant General Sir Philip Christison.

At first the arrival of the Allied troops was welcomed by the Indonesian side. But after the Indonesian side knew the intentions of the Allied troops (British) came with Dutch people who are members of the Netherlands Indies Civil Administration (NICA), the attitude of the Indonesian nation began to change, namely hostile. The security situation then got out of control again.

It seemed that Lieutenant General Christison had calculated that the Allied troops' task would not be successful without the help of the Indonesian government. Therefore, Lieutenant General Christison then entered into negotiations with the government of the Republic of Indonesia, and acknowledge De Facto that the Republic of Indonesia is an independent country on 1 October 1945.

Since this de facto acknowledgment, the entry of Allied troops into Indonesian territory was openly accepted by officials of the Republic of Indonesia.

This was done because the government of the Republic of Indonesia had to respect the tasks carried out by the Allied forces. This acknowledgment was further strengthened by a statement issued by Christison, that he would not interfere in matters relating to the constitutional status of Indonesia again.
