Folk Poetry: Definition, Types and Examples
Poetry is a literary work in which there are several types of stanzas and lines. By using beautiful words taken from a theme discussed by the author of the poem. And one example of such poetry is folk poetry.
Folk Poetry is folk literature that has a certain form. In general, folk poetry consists of several lines of sentences, some based on spells, some based on the short length of syllables, weak sound pressure, or only based on rhythm.
Types of folk poetry are in the form of traditional expressions, traditional questions, categories: describe and wawangsalan. Then the description is divided into two, namely assembling folklore, and folk beliefs in the form of mantras. Folk poetry contains values that develop in people's lives. Including folk poetry are old poems that contain messages and values of the Indonesian nation's ancestral heritage.

Because old poetry is passed down from generation to generation and the author is not known, old poetry is usually passed down by word of mouth. Old poetry usually looks stiff because it is bound by rules such as the number of lines and the number of words, repetition of words and also the number of lines in each stanza can be at the beginning or at the end of the rhyme or so-called with rhymes.
Gurindam
Gurindam is an old poem that comes from India. The term gurindam comes from the Indian language, namely kirindam which means "beginning" or "parable".
Gurindam is full of morals and religious values, therefore for people in the past it was very important to make it the norm in life. Gurindam is one of the old or Malay poems which is very important as the nation's cultural heritage.
Gurindam Characteristics :
- There are two lines in one stanza.
- Each line has a word count of about 10-14 words.
- Each line has rhymes or rhymes A-A, B-B, C-C and so on.
- It is a unified whole.
- The first line contains problems, questions, or agreements.
- The second line contains answers as a result of problems or agreements contained in the first line.
- The purpose or content of gurindam is contained in the second line.
- The contents of Gurindam usually contain advice, aphorisms or it could be about life philosophy.

Pantun
The definition of pantun is Malay poetry which is rooted and entrenched in society. Pantun is known by many names in various languages in the archipelago, watch (Tagalog), tuntun (Javanese), pantun (Toba language) which has more or less the same meaning, namely a regular utterance, educational direction, form politeness
Pantun is spread almost throughout Indonesia. The function of pantun in all regions (Malay, Sundanese, Javanese or other areas) is the same, namely to educate while entertaining. Through rhymes we entertain people by playing language sounds, insinuating (admonishing that something is not good) indirectly, or giving advice. This does not mean that our people are not firm when they want to say something, but it can be said that we have our own style in expressing something. Through our ancestral rhymes it seems more polite to rebuke or advise people indirectly so that the people we are addressing do not feel embarrassed or put on a corner.
The characteristics of the pantun can be seen based on its shape. These characteristics cannot be changed. If changed, the pantun will become seloka, gurindam, or other forms of old poetry.
Characteristics of Pantun :
- Each stanza consists of four lines.
- Each line consists of 8-12 syllables.
- The first and second lines are sampiran.
- The third and fourth lines are contents.
- The rhyme of each ending is a-b-a-b.

Syair is one of the old poems, poetry comes from the Persian country which was brought into this country along with the entry of Islam into Indonesia. The term or word of poetry comes from an Arabic country, namely syi'ir or syu'ur which means "feeling". who realizes", then the word syu'ur develops into syi'ru which means poetry in knowledge general.
