Definition of Expert System
An expert system is a computer system that can imitate or balance the ability of an expert. Experts here mean people who have special expertise in solving a problem that ordinary people cannot solve. Like doctors, mechanics, psychologists and so on.
Expert System Purpose
An expert system or what can be called an Expert System is a software package or computer program that has the purpose of providing advice and means of assisting in solving problems in certain areas of specialization, for example in science, engineering, mathematics, medicine, education and others so on. According to Arhami (2005) Expert systems are a subset of Artificial Intelligence.

Projecting the possible consequences of certain circumstances, for example demographic predictions, economic predictions and so on.
Diagnosis
Establish causes of malfunctions in complex conditions based on observed symptoms medical, electronic, mechanical and other diagnoses.
Planning (Design)
Determine the configuration of system components that match certain performance goals that meet certain constraints. For example circuit layout design, buildings.
Planning

Monitoring

Expert System Structure
According to Kusumadewi (2003:113-115) an expert system is composed of two important parts, namely the development environment and the consulting environment.
The development environment is used as an expert system development both in terms of component development and knowledge base. The consulting environment is used as a place to be consulted by people who are not experts.
The components in the expert system architecture/structure include:
User Interface (User Interface)
The interface is the mechanism used by the user and the expert system in communicating. The interface receives information from the user and converts it into a form that is acceptable to the system. And also the interface receives from the system and displays it in a form that can be understood by the user.
Knowledge Base
The knowledge base contains knowledge for understanding, formulating and solving problems.
Knowledge Acquisition
Acquisition of knowledge, namely the accumulation, transfer and transformation of skills in solving problems from sources of knowledge in computer programs. In this process the knowlede engineer seeks to absorb knowledge and then transfer it to the knowledge base. Knowledge obtained from experts, equipped with books, databases of research reports and user experience.
Inference Engine/Motor
This component contains the mechanism of mindset and reasoning used by experts when solving a problem. An inference engine is a computer program that provides a methodology for reasoning about the information contained in the knowledge base and in the workspace and for formulating conclusions.

Workspace is an area of unified working memory (working memory) used as a recorder of ongoing events in it including temporary decisions.
