Islam entered Indonesia through the following ways:
1. Trading
Islamic traders from Arabia, Persia and Gujarat played an important role in spreading Islam in Indonesia. The entry of Islam into Indonesia through trade media occurred at an early stage, namely in line with the hectic sea trade traffic in the 7th century AD to the 16th century AD.
At that time, more and more Muslim traders traded in Indonesia so that in the end they formed a settlement called Pekojan. It was from this place that they interacted and assimilated with the local community or indigenous people while spreading the teachings of Islam in Indonesia.
2. Marriage
Many Islamic traders who came to Indonesia married native women. Before the marriage takes place, indigenous women who are Muslim are asked to say the shahada as a sign of accepting Islam as their religion. Through this process of marriage, their group grew bigger and gradually developed from small communities to become Islamic kingdoms.
3. Education
The spread of Islam through education was carried out through Islamic boarding schools, especially by the kyai. The more famous the kyai who teaches at a pesantren, the greater the influence of the pesantren in society.
Some of the well-known Islamic boarding schools in Indonesia include the Ampel Denta Islamic Boarding School, owned by Sunan Ampel (Raden Rahmat) and the Sunan Giri Islamic Boarding School belonging to Sunan Giri, which most of his students come from Maluku. Apart from teaching at Islamic boarding schools, the kyai also often become advisers to kings or nobles.
4. Sufism
The spread of Islam that is no less important is through Sufism. Sufism is a teaching or a way to get closer to God. Sufism makes it easier for people who already have other divine foundations to understand and accept the teachings of Islam.
Besides that, the teachings of Sufism maintain cultural elements before Islam are continued in Islamic life, so that Islam is easily accepted by society. The teachings of Sufism are often found in chronicle stories and saga of the local community. Several figures who spread Sufism include: Hamzah Fansuri, Syamsuddin, Sheikh Abdul Shamad, and Nurdin al-Raniri.
5. Art
The spread of Islam in Indonesia can also be seen in Islamic arts, such as architectural heritage, music, sculpture, and literature. The results of these works of art can be seen in the buildings of ancient mosques in Demak, Banten, Cirebon and Aceh.
6. Political
A king has great power and influence and plays an important role in the process of spreading Islam. If the king of a kingdom embraces Islam, then the people will also embrace Islam.
The reason is because Indonesian people have high obedience to their king. For political purposes, the King will expand the territory of the kingdom, followed by the spread of Islam.
7. Da'wah
Muslim immigrants who stop in Indonesia, both those who live and those who don't live, some of them are truly intentional and intend to preach. The spread of Islam through preaching, is not only done by migrants from outside Indonesia.
Instead, Santri who are educated in Islamic boarding schools and are already qualified in religious knowledge are encouraged to do da'wah in spreading Islam. And some of the descendants of Muslim traders who married Indonesian natives were deliberately trained to become preachers.
